The tampering charge against the Jets comes less than a week before the Patriots visits them Sept. 17 in the second game of the season. The head coach of the Jets, Eric Mangini, was the Patriots' defensive coordinator last year.

I think what the Pats are saying with the tampering charge is that they gave Deion and his agent and the teams the right to work out a contract to suit Branch and his agent. Those parties did not however have the right to talk compensation for the Patriots. That negotiation was to be wiorked out exclusively between the Patriots org and the team that wanted to trade for branch. The Jets not only negotiated a contract with branch's agent they also tried to work out the compensation to the pats with agent. The Pats are saying that disclosure seriously inhibited the pats from be able so work out a deal with Branch.
