but no they can sign all the wr's they want and have 8 on their roster, i dont get it because with a system qb like brady, he doesn't like having a specific target, so in essense they aren't using brady the way they should by bolstering up that d and running game because he will pass the ball around to WR.

so far they have gaffney, caldwell, welker, brown, stallworth, washington, jackson. prob a few more practice squad members im missing.
They will be fine to sign their Rookies. What I wonder about is trying to get Asante Samual to camp. He said he would not report unless he has a long term deal worked out.

True but alot of speculation with Green going to Texans and Cle singing Lewis to a 1 year deal. Peterson may slide. I sure hope so.

If not second option of Marshawn Lynch does not sound to bad either.

I've seen some bad front offices, but Peterson is insanely good. If he doesn't go before the Bills pick, I'm finding a fallout shelter to hide in

What the Pats are doing in Clever. However it is PISSING ME OFF!!!!!!

They are basically got Stallworth and Washington to sign by making their contracts look like they were going to get a load of $$$$$. I will go out on a limb right now and say that NEITHER STALLWORTH OR WASHINGTON will be a Patriot following this year. It is all a ploy to load up for 1 year and they can void their contracts with basically no damage to their salary cap next year. I truly don't believe they have any intention of bringing back Stallworth or Washington after this year. I forget where I read the article, either ESPN or PFT, but they said Stallworth turned down an offer for more money to play with the Pats. I would dare to bet that team was Miami. JMHO!

I read that the contract was a propsoal put forth by Stallworths agent Drew rosiehouse because of all the question marks that surrounded Stallworth. Injuries, Being in the substance abuse program, and whatnot...and that nobody wanted to sign him long term with out some reassurances from him. It was a smart move on his agents part to get his player a chance. I'm not sure if he proposed the same contract to all the teams interested and then Stallworth chose the team he wanted to play for.

Peter King on Pats FA and cap

9. I think as much as I praise teams for showing a little restraint, I think one team that's gone wild and has done a good job is New England ... and the Patriots aren't done. For $14.2 million in 2007 cap dollars, the Patriots bought blocking back and special-teamer Heath Evans ($720,000 cap charge for '07), versatile defender Adalius Thomas ($3.4 million), blocking tight end Kyle Brady ($2.3 million), second running back/special-teamer Sammy Morris ($1.83 million), possession wideout/return man Wes Welker ($1.7 million), special-teams captain Larry Izzo ($475,000), third guard Billy Yates ($650,000) and, on Sunday, starting wideout Donte' Stallworth ($3.1 million).
Two notes: New England's still got the 13th-most cap room left, $7.7 million. And Mike Shanahan on Kyle Brady: "He's the best blocking tight end in football.''
The only way 2007 could have been better for New England is if Tom Brady doesn't throw the fourth-quarter interceptions at Indianapolis.

I just don't understand why players get themselves into these scenarios. I can understand why guys want to play for the Pats. I can't understand why players would continually sign long term contracts with this team year after year, when it seems almost every year they are cutting a very good player becuase he is either due a roster bonus, or they are just too expensive. (i.e. Lawyer Milloy, Corey Dillon, etc)

What I'm seeing in salary cap conversations around the league is that both the Stallworth and Washington signings are only a few hundred thousand in cap hit this year, with very little in dead cap taken up if the Patriots choose to let them go after this year. On the other hand, if either of them blows the doors off and the Pats choose to pick them up next year, the cap hits are roughly 3.5M each for several years after.

The Pats overall cap space for the WR position remains relatively low when compared to the rest of the league. Of course, none of their WR have ever stepped up to be a #1 or even a strong #2. They are hoping that quality will emerge from the quantity. It is a gamble.

Here is a great source for all things Pats cap:

http://www.patscap.com/

Miguel does a wonderful job at keeping up up with all things Pats cap, and he does it for free. A lot of media outlets use his page as well.

Considering he'll be starting with Stallworth next year, I assume not.

The speculation that this is BB's last year has absolutely no basis in fact. I can, however, understand why people on rival team message boards would wish that it was true. BB has said nothing to anyone about his future.

having roster bonuses is smart because they are not guaranteed, but if the player works out you can convert it to a signing bonus and spread it out over the contract which reduces the cap hit.
