Rogers/Jenkins/Stroud Trades Bring False Hope

DEFENSIVE TACKLE TRADES BRING FALSE HOPE

We continue to receive e-mails from readers who support the various teams who picked up via trade arguably washed-up defensive tackles.

And we continue to disagree.

If Shaun Rogers or Kris Jenkins or Marcus Stroud were that good, their former teams wouldn't have traded them. As a general rule, NFL franchises don't let truly invaluable players get out of their clutches.

He had a 2 year stretch of injruies but before and after he has been very healthy and jenkins wasn't overpaid, he got $9.5 mil in guaranteed money compared to $20+ mil for Rogers.

By giving Rogers and Jenkins new contracts, the Browns and the Jets have taken a huge risk that both of them won't try as hard as they can. The Bills merely shuffled some of Stroud's money around, but didn't give him the big raise he wanted. Of the three, then, he's the most likely one to come out playing hard.

All three teams likely regard the risk as justifiable based on the fact that the Giants proved to the football world that the way to get past the Patriots is with a dominant defensive line. (Not coincidentally, two of the three teams play in the AFC East and the other has designs on soon competing with the Patriots for elite status in the conference.)

For the bills part while I expect Stroud to play well and be a contributer what really opens things up is this allows McCargo to slide into the 3 Tech spot next to him.....

McCargo was really coming on last season and as a starter with a stud next to him look for that name as one of the top DT's by the end of the season.

Having stout DT's will of course help our LB's in Poz, Crowell, and our incoming Kavika Mitchell

Moss was such a crappy player that the raiders got rid of him for a 4th.

Thats the truth plain and simple. There's no guarantee that any of these moves will work out, but you can't fault the teams that brought them in for trying to plug holes with the best available talent.

The thing is a player that is 'invaluable' to a team may not be the right player for another team and it's system. Look at Welker, for example, he was a good player in Miami, but in New England he was crucial to their 07 success. If he remained here, he would have been just another guy who had an average season.

Welker wasn't crucial to their success, they were winning as much as they did w/ or w/o him. he benfitted from the Pats having so many other weapons but he wasn't a great player. He's a good player but not a key player.

Welker was the most overrated player in the game last year. His 10 yards per rec average was not crucial to NE's success. He got alot of his #s in garbage time when NE was running up the score and ANY WR could put up those #s w/ the other weapons NE had. Teams were not scared of Welker, they were scared of Moss and they took away Moss in the postseason allowing welker to beat them which is why the playoff games were close and they lost the SB.
