Davone BessAs a possible 3rd or 4th round draft choice as our WR. Thoughts.
While he doesn't have the size of the possession wr were're looking for at 5'10 187 he does have excellent hands hauling in 109 catches this year, runs great routes and makes people miss after the catch. He could also add some depth in our return game as he has some exp. Just wanted to know what others think. I've watch him the past 3 yrs. and I've been a big fan of his and think he has the skills to contribute right away.

I have only seen him in passing to this point. That said, he was a guy that jumped out at me athletically. He seemed to show great body control, agility, strength and acceleration. That said, I won't be sure about that feeling until I really spend some time watching a few of his games.
All that aside, his off the field history may red flag him for Miami. |

He may be a good slot receiver but as far as him being a KR or PR I don't see it happening. He had return duties his senior year but nothing spectacular although he did have a couple of good run backs.

I watched several of the Hawaii games this year. The thing about Bess that immediately springs to mind is that he's a playmaker, as he was consistently a highlight-in-the-making for Hawaii. That said, at the pro level he's a bit short, 5'10, and that probably means projecting him to the slot receiver position. His off-field issues occurred while he was in high-school, resulting in a stint at juvenile hall. He'll be a dynamic return guy.
All in all, I think he's a good pick, but we drafted a player of this type last year at #9 overall - so it doesn't make a lot of sense for us to pursue another player of this type. My opinion, as I think Bess will have moderate success as a pro, but we've got other needs to fill first. |
