The bottom line? Each season between now and 2006, Gardener will count at least $1.536 million against the cap. Although salary cap math bores most fans, the figures will have a huge ripple effect on the team's ability to make deals in the offseason.

But if Gardener retires or is cut before June 1, he would count as $7.68 million against the cap in 2002. That's because all of the prorated signing bonus money he has received would be counted this season.

Daryl doesn't retire. He's got to be so frustrated right now. I just hope the frustration doesn't consume and overwhelm him.
