The bottom line? Each season between now and 2006, Gardener will count at least $1.536 million against the cap. Although salary cap math bores most fans, the figures will have a huge ripple effect on the team's ability to make deals in the offseason.
But if Gardener retires or is cut before June 1, he would count as $7.68 million against the cap in 2002. That's because all of the prorated signing bonus money he has received would be counted this season.
