The question we have to ask ourselves, can we pick up anyone better, for equal or less money, and is anyone on our team good enough to make sam a dime corner, in other words, do we have 3 corners on our team right now that are better than sam?

Depends on how good this Mitchell kid is. A heathly Poole should be better than Sam. I think Daniels is playing better.

Clements is still a definate top 10 and will be paid top 5 IMO. Had 2 bad games vs SD and Stallworth, but great/good against Steve Smith 3-55, Randy Moss 3-43, Coles 4-33, Gallowy 0-0, Andre Johnson 3-18, Kennison 4-41, Chambers 4-60, Branch 3-92. Didn't list Atlanta because don't think know if they even have a definate #1 WR with Crumpler's the #1 guy for Vick.

Would love to have Clements in Miami next year if Buffalo doesn't want him.

In response to Amars question and according to my numbers (Merman may have slightly different ones):

Madison will have 2 yrs remaining (2006 & 2007) as follows:

2006

salary: $3.42 million
amortization: $2,912,931
cap hit: $6,332,931

not aware of any other bonuses

2007

salary: $4.5 million
amortization: $1,496,714
cap hit: $5,996,714

not aware of any other bonuses

If released before June 1st: all remaining amortization falls on 2006 cap thus

cap hit - remaining amortization = cap savings

$6,332,931 - ($2,912,931 + $1,496,714) = $1,923,286

(This also applies to a trade at any time before the season starts).

If released after June 1st: amortization for 2006 still applies to that yr but 2007 amortization still applies to 2007

cap hit - 2006 amortization = cap savings

$6,332,931 - $2,912,931 = $3.42 million (his salary)


My take: cut him in February and move on

If a team cuts/trades a player before June 1st, then the only money against the cap that they would owe him would be the remaining amoritized bonus money and not the player's remaining salary. Meaning: Sam Madison's cap hit if they keep him for the 2006 season would be the $3.42 + $2,912,931, which is a cap hit of $6,332,931. If they were to cut/trade him before June 1st...cap hit would be the $2,912,931 + $1,496,714 which is a total cap hit of $4,409,645. Saving us $1,923,286. If cut/released/traded after June 1st, we would owe the $1,496,714 in 2007 and not in 2006 meaning our 2006 total cap hit would only be the $2,912,931, which is a savings of $3,420,000. So why would you cut/trade him in February? In February he would count as $4,409,645 rather than $2,912,931 if after June 1st. So I'm confused with your logic.

But I do have a question...what is all this Mar 2nd hoopla I keep hearing on the news about avoiding roster bonus and getting under the salary cap? Does this only apply to roster bonuses which not all players have?

Leonard Little? He has one year remaining on contract @ 3.8M. I'd like the Rams to get bigger at DE, and we need a better CB (DBs are simply dreadful).

He is pretty similar to the guy you traded to Chicago last year, although he's had a tough year off the field. Not playing at the elite pass rusher level of a couple years ago, but a change of scenary might be just what the doctor ordered...

We're not interested. The guy is a good player but can't stay away from the bottle. He doesn't strike me as a good fit for the 3-4 defense we're moving towards. And besides, our pass rush is just fine with the guys we have. You may not have seen this, but two sacks on Sunday will give us 50 for the first time in franchise history.

Teams usually don't wait to split the dead money by cutting/trading after 6/1 for players that provide cap savings for the current years cap ($1.9 mill in Madison's case) because they need the money when free agency starts in March. Think of it this way for example. If Miami needs money to sign Clements in March, they use Madison's pre-6/1 $1.9 million cap savings in 2006 and Madison's "extra" $1.5 million not applied to 2007 by a post-6/1 cut/trade is paid to Clements in 2007.
