During the off-season acive rosters are expanded to 80 players. To get the Cap number you only include the 53 highest paid players. After TC the cuts come and the roster is trimmed down to the minimum with 53 active spots that count against the cap and 8 practice squad spots that dont count against the cap... To get to the practice squad the team must Cut the player...wait for them to pass through waivers where other teams can claim their rights...and then they can be signed to the PS.. Generally PS contracts average out at 60,000 a year...

During the offseason, it's actually the "top 51" cap charges plus any prorations of those players not within the "top 51".....
Practice squad players are paid weekly and that counts vs the cap......last year, a player on PS the entire yr got $79,000 (divide by 17 for weekly salary)
PS is now 8 players, so a team needed $79,000 x 8 = $632,000 of cap space for a full season long PS

Another Question:
If a player is paid the entire signing bonus up front, is the bonus charge still spread out through the length of the contract?
Seriously, did you have to quote that long as post?
:evil:Yes, I believe it is.

Signing bonus are always paid upfront ie: "Signing Bonus"... as for the charge i believe the max it can be spread is something like 6 years...as long as the contract is at least that long... Recently many teams have gotten rid of signing bonuses and are using a lot of roster bonuses....
