Earth: What Would Happen If Humans Vanished?

Environmentalists have their own eschatology; a vision of a world not consumed by holy fire but returned to ecological balance by the removal of the most disruptive species in history.

    Priceless:

Over time, though, Weisman's attitude toward the rest of humanity softened, as he thought of some of the beautiful things human beings have accomplished, their architecture and poetry, and he eventually arrived at what he views as a compromise position: a worldwide, voluntary agreement to limit each human couple to one child.

"If you laugh, you think, and you cry, that's a full day. That's a heck of a day. You do that seven days a week, you're going to have something special."

Well if, according to some religions, the world and everything we know was created for humans and humans alone, why would it still remain in exisence after we're gone?

I think you ought to have said a small group of environmentalists. It's not as if this voluntary human extinction movement is a widespread school of thought. Furthermore it's nothing new. I've always thought that if they were really serious about it, then they would kickstart things with their own voluntary extinction.

The earth is 4 billion years old....human beings have only been around for a very short time. I am sure there is the possibility we could be wiped out....all it would take is a large asteroid hitting us, or some kind of plague which has no resistance.
