Biotech company develops machine that 'cleans' blood

The biotech company, Aethlon Medical has developed the Hemopurifier which reportedly "separates and captures circulating viruses, viral proteins, and toxins before the occurrence of cell and organ infection".

, the manufacturer reported a 50% clearance of HIV viral particles during a 2 hour treatment and similar results with Hepatitis-C and "other envelope viruses including SIV, FIV, HCV, Measles, Mumps, Influenza, Ebola, Marburg, and Orthopox viruses. Recent studies indicate that the Hemopurifier affinity agent is also able to capture Dengue hemorrhagic fever virus."

The device can also be used to clear weaponized pathgens.

totally awesome... man, if a regime of treatments can reduce pathogens and virusus, the immune systems would have a much better chance of being effective... in hepc.. maybe this will reduce the liver damage, or prolong the effective life of the infected one... good stuff here Mal, thanks.

    How does this work exactly?
Once Dmac is drafted a Dmac Jersey will spontaneously materialize in the closet of each and every Dolfan...

...and not that replica crap either...

Well, I'm no expert in this kind of stuff, but this quote from the link kind of tells you what it does:

    QUOTE:
"The Hemopurifier converges the established scientific principals of hollow-fiber dialysis and affinity chromatography with the discovery of affinity agents that selectively bind envelope viruses."
    ----------------

So, basically it's a method of separation that takes advantage of molecules that selectively bind with the viruses or whatever pathogens you want to remove.

Anything more detailed than that is going to require some links or someone who knows this stuff better. Here's one on chromatography:

Ahh I see, cool stuff, its probably expensive as hell.
How useful could this be when it comes to AIDS?

Well, AIDS is caused by HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) and that report says:

    QUOTE:
"Pre-clinical human blood studies have documented the effectiveness of the Hemopurifier in capturing HIV (The AIDS Virus), HCV (Hepatitis-C), and Orthopox Viruses related to human Smallpox. The mechanism of capture has been shown to be via the polysaccharide chains that reside on the surface glycoproteins of envelope viruses"
    -------------------------

and Celtkin already linked to that CNN report in which it's claimed ~50% of viruses like HIV are cleared in approximately 2 hours of usage.
