For the first 90 minutes, this is one of the best films I have seen this year. I loved the story, atmosphere, and the epic over-the-top suspense music that feels like a 60's horror movie. And then the ending came... Without spoiling the film too much, I have never seen a movie ruined for me as quickly Shutter Island was in the last 15-30 minutes.

Big fan of Dennis Lehane since I read "Mytic River" a few years before the movie was released. "Shutter Island" was also an intensely captivating heavy plotline conveying some life parables that I found I was residually ruminating on for awhile after finishing the book..
IMO, unless you're talking a straight linear plot line romantic or action type flick, it's almost impossible for movies like these to capture and convey the book's multi-layered complex essence. Viewing them usually ends up disappointing me, although I knew that I might have felt different if never having read the book. ..so I'm gonna withhold my decision on whether or not to see it.

It looks fantastic. I haven't seen a movie in a theatre in a while, and I felt the tug to see this one. I'm a big Lovecraft fan and it sort of seemed in that pulpish vein.
Sounds like a Stephen King adaptation though.

I haven't been a fan of anything Scorsese has done in the last twenty years. I will probably end up giving it a shot on DVD, but it does not motivate me to go out to see it.
i'd almost agree with you if it wasn't for a few he's done relatively recently. the departed was excellent - basically the only reason i don't despise dicaprio. no direction home: bob dylan was also very good and worth seeing. besides those - you have to go back to the early 90's for cape fear and goodfellas. gangs of new york would've been good if it wasn't for the whole building up to an epic fight that never happened thing.
