I'm not sure either but there almost has to be live out there as massive as the universe is although I find it hard to believe that they have been here.

If it's not within our galaxy it may be physically impossible for any contact. Almost all galaxies are moving away from each other at ever-increasing speeds, some going faster than the speed of light.

So if there isn't intelligent life elsewhere in the Milky Way, or possibly Andromeda (which is set to collide with the milky way in a couple of billion years) we'll never meet it.

the estimate for collision with andromeda is around 5 billion years which coincidentally is roughly around when our sun turns into a white dwarf. you are correct that the universe is expanding exponentially but i've never heard that space between any two is being created faster than the speed of light, yet. hey, you should read or listen to 'just six numbers' by martin rees if you're interested in such things. he's the best.
