Alien encounters 'within twenty years'

Russian scientists expect humanity to encounter alien civilisations within the next two decades, a top Russian astronomer said on Monday.

"The genesis of life is as inevitable as the formation of atoms ... Life exists on other planets and we will find it within 20 years," said Andrei Finkelstein, director of the Russian Academy of Sciences' Applied Astronomy Institute, according to the Interfax news agency.

Speaking at an international forum dedicated to the search for extraterrestrial life, Finkelstein said 10% of the known planets circling suns in the galaxy resemble Earth.

If water can be found there, then so can life, he said, adding that aliens would most likely resemble humans with two arms, two legs and a head.

"They may have different colour skin, but even we have that," he said.

Finkelstein's institute runs a programme launched in the 1960s at the height of the cold war space race to watch for and beam out radio signals to outer space.

Im no Biologist, but why do they need water? Isnt it possible that life on another planet lives on totally different resources than we do? And I find it hard to believe that they would look like us. They have adapted to a different environment.

all good questions..another thing is if indeed they were to come,i have no reason they would be here for the better of things,like some seem to think.

If they find us first, humanity might be in big trouble. They would obviously have better technology.
The earth is an oasis, full of life and resources. They might want to "harvest" some of that.

I cannot stand watching the TV ....news...to much "kicking the can down the road" these days.
You saw the sci-fi show too?
The tv show presented an interesting concept, but there is probably a greater likelihood of alien monkeys beaming out of your buttooski.
If there were aliens able to travel the vast distances, they will have mastered faster than light propulsion or generational space ships of immense size. The other theory would be that the ships would be completely robotic in order to harvest resources.
In any scenario, our technology would be inferior.
