    What's so special about 11/11/11?

In medieval times, numerologists — those who searched for the mystical significance of numbers — believed all numbers had both positive and negative aspects … except for 11. In the words of the 16th century scholar Petrus Bungus, 11 "has no connection with divine things, no ladder reaching up to things above, nor any merit." Stuck between the divine numbers 10 and 12, 11 was pure evil, and represented sinners. That doesn't bode well for Nov. 11, 2011, the date when three 11s will align for the first time in a century. A new horror film, "11/11/11," has even been made for the occasion, and it plays on (or perhaps plays up) people's fear of coincidences surrounding the number.

It won't matter anyway when the world ends next year, lol. I'm still surprised by the amount of people who take any stock in numerology; let alone astrology, divination and superstition. It's clear humanity doesn't move in a linear progression. It's more like a saw tooth (Sam Harris The Moral Landscape). There is no guarantee societies will always move toward reason and science, but fortunately, everyone sees and benefits from science and technology because it works and is verifiable. People tend to choose what enriches their lives and discard nonsense when it no longer benefits them or starts to embarrass or hinder them.

The only thing that need be done about numerology et all is continually point out the nonsense and explain why its modern, scientific alternatives (i.e. astronomy over astrology, chemistry over alchemy) are superior and beneficial. People tend to be ego-centric for many justifiable reasons, and when you point out how modern knowledge benefits them, they will eventually "see the light", unless they are so entrenched in mysticism that they are hopelessly lost. But even then, I know people who have come around, albeit slowly and painfully. This gives me hope for humanity.
