The one thing I have a question on is how in blazes are we going to trade the #8 or #9 pick for TWO 1st round picks? I just don't see that happening.
You have to think of everything within a context. Everything has to fit, and it has to be realistic. Those are the two requirements.
An example of realistic is, can you sign Matt Flynn AND get Paul Soliai back? Chances are, no you cannot. There just isn't enough money under the cap to do that. As things stand it's rumored Miami already may have to get rid of Yeremiah Bell just to have some operating room.
Here's one option:
Plan 1 - Weeden the Garden
SIGN: DT Paul Soliai, CB Will Allen, FS Reggie Nelson, SLB Manny Lawson, LE Cory Redding
LOSE: DE Kendall Langford, SS Yeremiah Bell
DRAFT: RT Riley Reiff, QB Brandon Weeden, LB Bruce Irvin, DE Kyle Wilbur, WR Ryan Broyles, TE Chase Ford, FB Cody Johnson
COMMENT: Essentially Miami becomes Brandon Weeden's team. You're betting on Weeden to win the job from Matt Moore either in 2012 or 2013. They'll be throwing the ball to Brandon Marshall, Brian Hartline, Davone Bess, Clyde Gates, Anthony Fasano, Charles Clay and Chase Ford. Ryan Broyles' rookie year would be a tossaway year, recovering from knee surgery and learning Joe Philbin's offense. What I like about that is, chances are one of the four receivers up top be it Marshall, Bess, Hartline or Gates, is just not going to 'get it' in Philbin's offense. Broyles is a nice backup plan to step in for whichever guy isn't getting it. Weeden will be protected by Top 10 bookends in Jake Long and Riley Reiff with a Top 15 pick at Center, and probably Richie Incognito and Nate Garner at Guard. The addition of Cody Johnson gives you a true fullback that is a battering ram in short yardage situations (only lost a total of 19 yards in 340 carries at Texas), which was a big weakness of the Bush/Thomas unit in 2011. Chase Ford rounds out a nice Tight Ends unit where you have a great blocker in Anthony Fasano, a joker in Charles Clay, and a seam controller in Chase Ford. On defense, you're relying on a heavy defensive line rotation with big bodies and lots of muscle to stop the run, and then allow Cam Wake and Bruce Irvin/Kyle Wilbur/Manny Lawson to come in on pass downs, pin their ears back and really just go after the passer. You're relying on Karlos Dansby to continue the work he did replacing Crowder in the middle, with Burnett playing Will and Lawson as a run stopping Sam, Misi as a backup at both Sam and Will, and a guy that can rotate at D-End when needed. The back end sees Reshad Jones moving into Yeremiah Bell's position which would make Slimm and some others happy, while Reggie Nelson plays Free Safety, and Vontae Davis, Sean Smith, Will Allen and Jimmy Wilson continue at corner. To me, perimeter defense wasn't a problem in 2011. It was the middle, the safety spots, and communication between linebackers.
