SAN FRANCISCO — A federal judge overturned California's gay-marriage ban Wednesday in a landmark case that could eventually force the U.S. Supreme Court to confront the question of whether same-sex couples have a constitutional right to wed.

The ruling by Chief U.S. District Judge Vaughn Walker touched off a celebration outside the courthouse. Gay couples waved rainbow and American flags and erupted with cheers in the city that has long been a haven for gays.

it'll be better when the supreme court makes it legal, then it'll be a great day. pretty good decision today.

of course, that leaves pot smokers as one of the last human rights that need to be granted equality. we're discriminated against daily, but our voices aren't as loud or as organized as gay people. but the wave is rolling, no pun intended.

I would assume it's more of the constitutional right to not be discriminated against. By saying some people can marry and others can't, you're inadvertently placing an hierarchical system in place...

just because someone doesn't agree with everything you believe doesn't make them any less of a person than you are, doesn't make you right and them wrong, doesn't make you good and them bad.

whatever happened to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness thing.

more tolerance, less judgement, the world will be a better place. treat others as you would have them treat you.

when you deny somebody something that does no harm to you, that means you would like others to act the same towards you. when you stick your snout in others lives, they should be able to stick their snout in your life and make decisions for you.

most people want to be free to do what they'd like to do as long as it doesn't bring harm to others. and i don't see how two people of the same sex, that want to get married, affect anyone other than themselves. now if they push you to get married to someone, then that's a problem. but i never heard of two gays pushing their type of relationship on others. they just want others to be tolerant of their lifestyle.

I dont know why people think constitutional rights could be decided from a popular vote anyway. The vote on the issue has always made the least sense out of any of the options for deciding the issue in my opinion

Its like having a popular vote of Mississippi in the 1960's if you want integration.
