handed gay rights advocates a major victory, singing into law a measure that legalizes same-sex marriage in Washington state, making it the seventh in the nation to allow gay and lesbian couples to wed.

Gregoire signed the bill in the state reception room in the Capitol, surrounded by gay rights supporters. It's a historic moment, but same-sex couples can't walk down the aisle just yet.

The law takes effect June 7, but opponents are already mounting challenges on multiple fronts.

Not surprising. The Pacific Northwest is pretty much a liberal stronghold. I'm surprised it took this long to be honest...

If I could take your pain and frame it, and hang it on my wall,

You'd be surprised with Washington, it's got a real red/blue divide, ditto for Oregon. There's one here too, but not as pronounced.

But still, Washington/Cali/Oregon all 3 have the chance to legalize cannabis this election.

And yeah, it's by and large a blue bastion, mainly because of the population centers (Seattle, PDX, The City/Bay Area, LA, etc.)

I have a feeling that legalizing weed is one of those things where if it passes in one place, it'll be a windfall in other areas. All it will take is some place Oregan legalizing, reaping the benefits of it, and every other state seeing that the big bad problem isn't a problem at all. Will be an interesting thing to watch...

I think Washington will do it for sure, especially since it would open up hemp farming in Eastern WA.

Oregon's pretty libertarian, so it's likely to, but there's a shot it may not. Oregon R's are different than most, though, so a "red wave" flocking to the polls wouldn't doom it.

For here, they want to regulate it like they do the wine industry, if it's legalized. It's a pretty good idea, and a much better bill than the last one is.

Colorado was going to put it on the ballot, but it didn't get on.

Washington is now the 7th state in the union to permit gay marriages. Governor Chris Gregoire signed the debatable bill into law on Monday. The signing was surrounded by much jubilation from proponents of the bill. However, a strong opposition plans to have it repealed. Article source:
