Player Long's contract expires after 2013, not 2012

But what wasn’t publicized was the fact Long’s deal included a clause that would put a sixth year in place, and that happened after Long earned a Pro Bowl berth for a solid showing his rookie season.

To make a long story short….get it?…. Long is under contract for two more seasons despite what some are reporting.

His cap number for 2013 is $12,350,000, and that factors in money from his initial signing bonus, and some extra bonuses he’s received for making four straight Pro Bowls.

absolutely no reason to approach him about an extension before the end of the 2012 season...
hoops scoops...prospects mia should target top 4 rounds 2013 draft...

Even though he has 2 seasons left on his current deal, I think I would try to work out a contract extension now. We could lock him up long term and hopefully work it so we get some salary cap relief from the $12+ million he will count against the cap this season and next. It might be a tiny bit risky considering he been banged up a bit, but he is still an elite LT.

If not an extension, I would at least approach him about possibly restructuring his current deal a bit to get us some more cap room.

this is great news. but maybe we should try and sign him to an extension after a injury season, he may take less money that way. thats just my 2 cents anyway

but we should approach him about restructuring to reduce his cap number for 2012 and/or 2013.

This is good news and yes I would still try to get an extension done in hopes of some more cap relief.

ehhh...i'd be talkin more to marshal and dansby personally about restructuring right now...but why guys would consider approaching long coming off injury and making $12 mil the next 2 years makes zero damn sense...

we got bigger fish to fry than extending long right now...any time within his final year of his deal offseason etc thats when you approach a guy about an extension...any time after this season...not now...not when he's making top money anyways he's happy its not like he's getting hozed like cam wake is right now

you sign him to an extension now when you have 2 years left and $25 mil pretty much still left to pay him and he goes belly up due to injury you will get destroyed cap wise given the bonus etc...i'd make long play in 2012 and show he can stay healthy and play at a high level before i just gave him big money with a year plus still left on his contract

Strange contract if what Omar is saying is true

Normally if the contract length changes at all then it gets shorter when the player hits his incentives, not longer (the incentive for the player is to hit free agency earlier)
