See no problem with this if the locals don't want to cut spending or raise taxs. Personally would prefer the later.

And Daria, you don't eat at the public high school? Whats the difference from the "corporate America" milk companies getting subsidized tentacles? Think mine was provided by Pet. If you want to argue the merits of the health about sodas being sold at the high schools, fine I'm all for this. Anti-commericalism? Lamm should have just told her to go camp out with the Occupiers.
The issue isn't the sale of products, obviously that is necessary. The issue is advertising in and on school property. Schools are supposed educate kids and teach them how to think. Marketing products to them and treating them like a demographic is quite contrary to that goal.

The second was a dig at Daria. The first, whats more important not getting rid of a few teachers for schools to supposedley educate those high schoolers or supposedly "protecting" them from seeing a billboard on the side of their school bus?

I'm totally open to any idea that's cheaper and better. I think the United States ranks about 25 to 30 in the world when it comes to education but we spend the most money on it. Which means over 20 or so countries spend far less than we do and have better results. Seems to me that we could learn a thing or two from other countries on education and save ourselves a ton of money in the process.
I'd certainly like to see a list of those 24-29 other Countries???

Love to see a list of the 20 or so Countries that spend "Far Less" and have better results???

I agree that if that model is out there, we need to plagerize ASAP. I just don't think your point is that valid.

It shows how a country like Finland spends a 1/3 less per student than we do but ranks higher in just about every catergory. Same with Japan, New Zealand, Korea, Iceland and others. All spend far less and produce better results.

    So 5 is now 20?

    You're right. Our Schools are failing. When I went, 5 didn't = 20.

I would QUICKLY challenge that its apples and Oranges. America is very unique in that we are such a vast vast melting pot of cultures whereas, especially the Countries you have posted are very very internal culturally. That in itself makes a HUGE difference as the teaching doesn't need to be altered on a case by case, region by region or student by student basis as it often does in the US of A.

We obviously have some HUGE falling down in academics and education, but I propose that Teachers Salaries, or lack thereof lies at the very fore-front.

I find it ridiculous that the people that forge our entire Society get paid mere pittance, while, especially Pro-Athletes often scoff at education (Ever hear Dez Bryant talk?) but make millions upon millions of dollars a year.
THAT is an easy to identify underlying snake in the entire situation IMVHO.

EDIT: I don't want to beat a broken drum, but I would REALLY like to see how immigration of millions of uneducated into the USA in the last 2 decades has affected these numbers. I believe that EVERYBODY from everywhere deserves a good education, but just remember, by being the blind ambassador we have been, there is a price to pay.

If you would have learned to read better then you would have noticed I said "I think" when it came to those numbers. I wasn't stating those numbers as fact. In fact here are the real numbers......

The three-yearly OECD Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) report, which compares the knowledge and skills of 15-year-olds in 70 countries around the world, ranked the United States 14th out of 34 OECD countries for reading skills, 17th for science and a below-average 25th for mathematics.

The number I thought came from math where 24 other countries rank better than us. So by this report anywhere from 13 to 24 countries rank better than us in different fields. While spending far less.

My reading is obviously just as good as yours

Once again, you are TERRIBLY misleading. All of those Countries spend less, far less, the same, or more?

Just cause you type it doesn't mean its true.

I also still challenge. How does the INCREDIBLY input of immigrants flooding our public schools affect those numbers? America is very unique when compared to the other Countries that you are touting.

Perhaps, the real issue is that we need to address illegal immigration instead? That would both dramatically drive the math Comprehension and level up while driving the cost down!!!

So Europe doesn't have any immigrant problems?

Another than the Swiss. All those countries spend less and produce better results.

I PROMISE you that Iceland, Finland, Japan, New Zealand and Korea don't have the same immigration issues we have, not even close.

Those are the Countries you named off. That pattern is very easy to see and recognize
