It’s not even summer yet, and gas prices are already soaring. The national average for a gallon of gasoline hit $3.57 this week. So what’s causing the spike? And could high gas prices end up demolishing President Obama’s slowly recovering poll numbers?
Here’s what keeps David Plouffe up at nights. (Todd Weddle/AP) By and large, the current price of gasoline isn’t some deep mystery. Global oil prices are at a

right now, in part because of tensions with Iran and in part because available crude resources can barely keep up with growing demand worldwide. When oil gets pricey, gasoline gets pricey. What’s more, a number of U.S. gasoline refineries closed early for maintenance this year, causing pump prices to spike higher in places such as California. (The rising price of crude has also forced some unprofitable refineries

that speculative hedge fund money is driving up gasoline futures, global forces still appear to be the prime suspect.

it will be interesting to see how the gas prices shape this election. as of late obama has been on an upswing, since the economy has been a little more stable as of late. how will the country react if the gas prices go to $5 a gallon? i think this could potentially be a disaster for obama. i can see the republican commericals now "obama lent billions of dollars to bankupt green energy companies, while americans felt the pain at the pump", thoughts?

The whole "recovery" Obama and the news is pimping is an illusion. Gas prices will only add to the mess. The economy sucks and will continue to suck for a while. Unfortunatley the GOP is totally incapable of putting up a good candidate. Obama will probably win easily even with the economy in shambles.

yup. i think the media is jizzing their pants right now that they think obama is a shoe in. i think if the projected unemployment goes up, combined with gas prices around $5, i cant see how obama makes it to another term. not that i think the republicans deserve to win either, but the incumbent usually gets blamed.

in the grand scheme of things its not that much extra money. right now it is $3.50, at $5.00 thats $1.50 per gallon. times 10 for a 10 gallong tank is $15 a week, times 4 weeks a month is an extra $60 a month for gas. if you cant afford $60 extra then i dont know what else to tell you. alot of it is sensationalism.

It isn't about not being able to afford an extra $60-80 of gas. It's more about deciding whether or not where you're going is important enough to warrant gas being as high as it's ever been. What about the people who need Premium gas? Yeah it's their choice to have fancy cars and such but that doesn't necessarily mean that just b/c they have radical rides they can and are willing to spend more on gas each week.

ok. then they are paying an additional $10 a month in gas, so what. im not trying to sound like a snob, but it really isnt that much money. my point of view is, the politicians are doing far more to hurt us, IMO, it equals far more than $60 a month. wasteful spending, wars, a crappy tax code, etc. as much as i like when obama looks like he doesnt have control, i think this isnt as big of a deal as the republicans will make it out to be.

btw, the democrats to deserve to be destroyed over this. i saw a video the other day back in 2007 all the big democrats were giving bush a hard time about the high gas prices. same crap, different leader.

Your math is flawed. Let's break it down shall we:

Average Miles per Gallon of all US Auto's 20mpg, for SUV's it is lower at 17mpg. Average American drives 18,000 miles a year (factor in going to see Grandma and Grandpa or Vegas, whatever floats your boat).

In a car with average mileage per household 20mpg that is 900 gallons of gas a year x 3.57 per/gal = 3213 per year or $61.79 a week.
In a car with average mileage per household 20mpg that is 900 gallons of gas a year x 5.0 per/gal = 4500 per year or $86.54 a week.

    Remember 52/4 = 13 (NOT 12) or about $25 a week increase.

But where your math is flawed is in the notion of the one car household. How many people own one car these days? 2.28 cars a household is the national average, do you own a boat? (rent one for family vacations?) Jet Ski's? Toys? Lawn mowers? Weed Eaters?

Everything stacks up so that measly (not trivial to some families) little 25 bucks a weeks becomes larger yet:

Lets say the second car runs half the national average at 450 gallons a year use = 30.89 a week now and with the increase 43.27 a week. (+12.38). The lawn takes 2 gallons a week to trim and mow = 7.00 a week and with the increase it's now 10 bucks a week (+3.00). The family vacations cost of rentals, plane fuel etc...it hits your bottom line and before you know it you are spending over a 100 bucks a week in fuel for your family.

Now you say you can go green and buy a hybrid, which is highly recommended if you are single or a small family but come on it isn't worth the effort if you have more than 3 in your household, unless you travel light. Oh yeah let's not forget the public transportation, we have to get little Marry to school and to save money you send her on the bus to reduce your gas consumption, only problem is the school boards gas costs are rising as well so now your taxes go up to cover additional budget concerns in 2013 and beyond.

Anytime you raise the price of a product by roughly 43% it causes severe headaches for the masses but when that product is gas, it just adds fuel to the fire, gas is too interwoven into the fabric of America.

Oh and don't forget the cost of servicing your vehicle in the 43% increase, oil, tires, parts etc...the cost associated with producing and distributing those go up proportionally as well.

    The horse sounding better yet?

How are they spending an extra $10 a month? Imagine what truck drivers are going through. Cab drivers. The people who can't work near their home for a million other reasons.

its going to be a huge issue

this mixed with the pipeline rejection (which is a huge political issue) go hand in hand and will be huge debate and campaign wise.
