Jake Long would make a pretty good punter.

I'm already imagining the barrage coming my way, but here's the thought process- Jake Long is a terminator in cleats, a destroying machine. They could put him at Guard and I'd be happy.

Jonathan Martin has GREAT feet and athletecism, a natural LT. I don't care about this LT/RT bulls****. If Martin pans out as I think he will, he's better suited for the left side. Put Jake Long at RT and let him destroy people. I'm not worried about the money issue LT vs. RT- Jake Long is an All-Pro and future Hall of Famer- get the best five out there at the best possible positions and go f****** destroy some people.

I won't argue about any money issue. I won't argue about athleticism as both players Long and Martin are impressive athletes.
But let me express about offensive line foundations. An offensive line must serve for two simple tasks: protect the passer and create holes for running attack.
First the o-line must protect the passer in the best way, buying time and keeping defenders as busy as possible, so the QB can find a receiver while he follows his assigned route.
On the other hand an offensive line must split the defensive line in order to create a path for running backs. There o-liners must switch positions, unbalancing the line, place the defender on the wrong situation, sacrificing some space but moving the defender to certain angle.
With that in mind, to protect the passer, a tackle must move as fast as possible to push a DE/OLB and guide him to search the largest path to get close to the passer, while both guards and center will try to help each other to block strong DT's away of the QB. With right handed passers, left tackle represents he's protecting the blind side, where the QB has little chance to react, so you need to add as much time as possible. At right side you have more help, because the QB can watch the rushers and move away, so RT is less complicated. Also stronger and faster pass-rushers use the blind side to get a chance to go for the passer, so coaching staff must be sure that your best man is covering the LT spot.
Jonathan Martin has very long arms, one of the first things to watch in a tackle, but his feet mechanics is merely fine and he isn't as strong as Jake Long. So the best usage of both guys is to place Long at LT and Martin on RT. You can bet that with some training and after some playing experience, Martin could switch sides when Long's play level climbs down because of some injury or with age.

    Sure!!
But what about switching Tannehill and Long, Long could be a complete threat using his super strong arms to throw the football and running when receivers can't lose their coverage. Ryan Tannehill is starting his NFL carer, so it doesn't matter where he plays.
