i agree with your bolded statement lou, 100%. There is one more huge factor that everyone in this argument misses, time is a relative measurement, it is based on human definition. On a large enough scale millenia could look like seconds and if my life spanned millenia why would i define smaller units of time for average measurement such as life?

So like i have said in the past and i will say until i die, there are certain theories that could be all inclusive, meaning everyone is right, atheists, christians, muslims, creationists, evolutionists all could be wrapped into one large theory that encompasses everything, the only thing you have to do is redefine a few things that mankind deem as "known" but really are only relative definitions based off the unknown.

nowhere in the bible does it state that the days of creation are 24-hour days. Young earth creation science advocates will argue over the correct translation of "day." the translation of "day" is irrelevant. If you are in the middle of space, what is a "day." if you are eternal, what meaning does time have? Are we going to have clocks in heaven? Wow, there goes another million years! Only human arrogance would insist on limiting god, an infinite being, to a finite 24-hour day.

"Live and let live" is a great philosophy generally but I can't help but notice that religion tends to inflame the worst aspects of human nature. People kill (or otherwise brutalize) each other over their beliefs with some regularity but atheists killing believers for believing? Not so common.

I don't see what's the problem with recognizing religion (or any belief -- meaning, non-rational -- system, really) as a loaded gun that easily and commonly goes off in ways big and small. What else would cause a seemingly rational and reasonable person like LouPhinFan to believe that people who don't follow his beliefs are due an eternity of unrelenting torment? That's no minor penalty, after all. And to believe it has been levied against nearly every person who's ever lived and most still living. That's one hell of a misanthropic God, especially since Christianity states that God knows everything you're going to do before he even creates you. It would be like if I built a chair and then burned it because it couldn't fly.

I guess if there really is a heaven I won't be the first to say, "well, you should have created me better." But I'm sure looking forward to the rebuttal. Should be a doozy.

You're assuming that man wouldn't just find something else to fight about if there was no religion. In the end, most every war is really about power and having power over someone or something. Religion is a convienent reason to give for war. If it wasn't religion, it would just be something else.

That's not even close to the same thing. Religion is the reason, not the weapon.

Removing a excuse for violence sounds like a just cause to me. The hope might be in vain, but perhaps if we remove enough causes we can get over our need to inflict damage to one another.

As well, power can have checks or balances. A government controlling its population can be overthrown, greed can be sated, and corruption can be stopped. But with religion, those who hold the power over others do so without abandon or remorse. They can continue to hold power over others indefinitely because they feel its the right thing to do and they will get the best reward humanly possible for doing so. You can pay off a United States congressman(lord knows thats true) but you cant make him feel good for accepting that payment. You cant say the same thing when it comes to leaders of religious institutions. The abuse many of them purpetuate is considered justified.

Mankind now has the ability to destroy ourselves with ease. It is no longer considered fiction that we could go extinct. The weapons that can make it possible are not really the problem. The problem is many of the worlds population actually want it to happen. Here in the United States we had people celebrating, with fervent prays and pleads, the violent destruction of the Earth just last year. The human race will never be safe unless we recover from our pathological desire to kill each other off. Not having the single biggest excuse in the history of mankind to blame would undoubtedly be a good move....in a ideal world.
