Game in Arizonia on Sept 30th- Attending

I am about to book my flight from Newark to Phoenix.
As it looks I am going to do Thursday the 27th till Tues Oct 2nd

Anybody locals have any advice as to:

where to stay....(What area)
Do I need a rent a car?
What type of area/location is the Stadium in?
Tail gating?

I would prefer to stay in one area where there are lots of bars and restaurants.
I golf, but I do not plan on golfing.
I have a friend, that lives about 40 minutes south in Casa Glades ( or something like that).

Any advice or input would be appreciated.
