Since we've been in the habit of grabbing guys from the U...

...why not bring in Demarcus Van Dyke? The Raiders cut him to make room for Joselio Hanson.

He was drafted in the 3rd round last year, he is 6' 1" and ran a 4.28, not sure why they gave up on him, its not like he was god awful. But I think he'd be great to develop as our 4th guy, then if we need a 5th cb, let Jimmy Wilson come in (which I assume we'll see a lot of him this year anyway)

He won't make it to #8 on the waiver wire. I'll be stunned if he does.

On a somewhat related thought.... I am not a fan of the U.. but since I stream WQAM all day how can I not follow them. That said regardless it is kind of nice to see the ties growing between the two teams. I hope that when the U turns things around I hope that hte Fins don't turn a blind eye to the local talent.

I wouldn't put too much stock in the fact that he was a 3rd round pick. Van Dyke seldom seemed like a guarantee to be drafted, let alone that high. He was a painfully skinny kid who played early with the Canes then largely fell out of favor. Not physical at all. In fact, often abused. He rescued his reputation in the post season games where he was more feisty than he'd ever demonstrated at Miami. But I thought it was somewhat smoke and mirrors, like Chase Ford last year. Van Dyke and Ford were mocked players on Canes message boards during their playing days.

LaRon Byrd was someone we could have looked at. I think I mentioned him positively in the draft forum. Big physical receiver with some talent, the instincts to shield the defender. He made the Cardinals roster as a free agent and has earned praise from Fitzgerald. For most of their careers at Miami, Byrd was favored above Tommy Streeter. I never understood why Byrd fell off the map with the Canes.

He's a developmental guy, this being a throw away year, might not be a bad gamble for this franchise to bring him in for a year.

DVD isn't physical at all, but he can cover. IMHO fine as a 4th or 5th CB, and while he isn't a great tackler he also isn't as bad as some would have you believe. Without adding 15 lbs though I don't see him ending up as a frontline CB in the NFL.
