SOAPBOX Crazy NFL Helmet idea - Reduce concussions

OK, I've heard a number of retired, older NFL players say that if they went back to using leather helmets that would reduce the concusion risks. Initially I thought that was a crazy idea, but after some thought and after seeing that HBO special on the Saints player with ALS I think it IS a good idea just a little extreme.

There is no denying the dangers of multiple concusions. The evidence is already stacked up pretty high and it seems to be getting clearer all the time.

What about if they added some kind of inflatable cushion, like a crumpler zone to the front of the helmet?

The NFL would not be compromising the logos on the Helmets. It would not weigh anything or impede player vision.

There is no denying that players lead with the crown of their helmets and intentionally use the crown as a rhino horn. It is ugly and really unnecesary. The NFL will at some point be forced to deal with the mounting medical evidence. I would much rather see them proactively remove or reduce the risk than see them continue to butcher the rules every year.

Like in rugby. They'd be carting guys off the field every game probably.

The NFL would never go for that. They like helmets with big colorful logos.

Helmets do prevent injuries, but they probbaly cause just as many or more with the way that they get used.

It's almost impossible not to notice, you can hear the good 'Kill shots' with your eyes closed.

The hit that concussed Thomas sounded like a gun shot it was so loud.

Great Idea airbags for helmets. We could get the NFL to work jointly with the auto industry to develope them.

    Yeah you can.

Remember sitting on the bench showing off how many scrapes of paint you had on your
helmet? I sure as **** do.

The NHL has the same problem with half the helmet of the NFL. It will not work at would just lead to less teeth.

The problem is that energy is still being transferred to the head. You'd need to run around with a giant globe of viscoelastic foam surrounding the shell of the helmet.

A lot of people are using that new X1 helmet now.

    I have a few ideas.

    1. Use the sensors they are testing in college right now and if a guy suffers a blow at xx force give him a quick test, if the force is above a certain level have a mandatory rest period

    2. Mandatory mouthgaurds. My boxing coach told me a long time ago that mouthgaurds aren't to protect your teeth, what they do is keep your jaws from crashing together which helps against getting concussed.

    3. Get rid of the artificial turf. I don't know if this would make a big difference but you have think natural grass would both slow the players down a bit and soften the falls a bit.
