Looming Bush contract talks a dilemma but also an opportunity

At some point within the next month the Dolphins and the agent representing Reggie Bush will discuss what precisely to do about the contract status of the team's most impressive player so far this season.

Bush, the NFL's second-leading rusher, is in the final year of his contract. And although neither side pushed the other to get an extension signed before the start of this season -- with both thinking they held a good hand and both comfortable of the future -- the questions now begin to resonate:
Can the Dolphins afford to keep their best player before he hits free agency?
Can the Dolphins afford to let their best player walk away in free agency?

Bush is making $6 Million this year.

    DeAngelo Williams just signed a 5 yr(s) / $43,000,000 that averages 8.6M (16M Bonus)
    Matt Forte just signed a 4 yr(s) / $30,400,000 that averages 7.6M (4M Bonus)
    Adrian Peterson signed a 7 yr(s) / $96,000,000 that averages 13.7 (12M Bonus)

If Bush keeps it up Mr Ross is going to have to open up his checkbook.

There is alot of range there. How much is Reggie worth?

The other possibility that was not mentioned in the article was trading him before the trade deadline to a contender.

It may not be the sexy thing to do, but if there is enough value on him it may be the smart long term thing to do.

He will be 28 at the start of the season, he has had a couple major injuries...I know this won't be a popular idea with the fans, but it might be smart.

I would only entertain the idea for a 2nd rounder or above, or a young stud receiver that could be a part of the future here.
Attack the Person, Not the Ideas:

Attack the person in some way. For example:
    • Attack their expertise, questioning their qualifications or experience
    • Comment on their inability to make a good argument
    • Attach them to discredited others
    Example

You are not qualified to make such a statement.
You would say that, wouldn't you.
And who do you think is going to believe you.

Hopefully they can get something done here during the season. They need to keep that franchise tag available for Jake Long if needed.

Nubs, what key FAs do we have this year besides Bush and Long?

Is Sean Smith a FA? Who else is necessary to retain

DeAngelo money at most. I LOVE Bush, but it's not a league that generally places as high a value on RB's as 10 or 20 years ago. We can't afford to break the bank and end up in salary cap hell here. Look at Tennessee with Chris Johnson. If his rut is long-term, his contract will set them back years. Hopefully they can work it out. IMHO no RB is worth $10/million per given the salary cap, and the nature of offenses today.

Paying for a running back is not a good investment. Bush is a great player but teams can win with average RBs (Ex. Green Bay, Giants, Atlanta). Add in that the shelf life of a rb is like 4 years and I would say that Bush is not worth the investment. I love what Bush is doing so far but he is not worth 8 million he will ask for if he continues on this pace. Lets be honest, the west coast offense is a passing offense. Green Bay has been running with Ryan Grant and Starks the past few years and seem to do quite well.

Agreed, thats why I brought up the possibility of trading him to a contender before the deadline...really loading up for next year.
