Volin- Defense playing well but living dangerously, need more impact plays

But the defense has been living dangerously. They have made very few impact plays – only two sacks (both by Randy Starks in the first half of the opening game) and one takeaway, an interception by safety Reshad Jones on the final play of the win over Oakland.
The Dolphins are minus-3 in turnover margin.
“We do have to knock the ball loose a little bit more,” coach Joe Philbin said. “There’s no question about it.”
Philbin said the Dolphins were willing to give up some yards against Oakland as long as they protected their second-half lead.
“Sometimes, you’re a little more tolerant of some yards getting gained against your team as long as you’re keeping them out of the end zone, which was kind of the case,” Philbin said.

Dead on. Lack of takeaways is alarming. However, they do seem to come in bunches. Maybe this week?

Coyle needs to figure out a way to get his guys to the QB and create turnovers

You gotta think there is gonna be a bit of lag because its a new system, so the takeaways are not going to come just yet due to the fact that the players are not playing as fast as they can. But the front 4 has no excuse, the lack of pressure is alarming. Miami has to go after a quality DE in the draft.

We barely have any damn talent on defense yet we're solid. There's not much Coyle can do about the lack of turnovers, he's doing a solid job. Both he and Nolan have done a solid job despite the talent they had to work with, they got the most of what they can from them.

We are still 5 pieces away from making our defense a strong defense.

He needs to come up with a few more exotic pressures and looks to get after the QB on 3rd down passing situations. He did that against the Raiders and we harassed Palmer the whole second half although we didnt get a sack we forced him to make bad throws. This defense lacks impact players but if we can come up with some blitz packages maybe it will help.

That where Vonte Davis trade figures in IMO Vonte was as much of a playmaker as anyone we presently have on the defense outside of Wake and probably Starks. Ireland and the coaching staff really hurt themselves in that regards to that trade.

should of locked down anderson when we had him in town, he had 10 sacks last year and would help this pass rush immensely, we cant count on vernon to get to the qb he is a rookie and odrick is nowhere to be found.

Your kidding right......the defense is already strong, but in order to be elite it needs a "game changer" ala Ed. Reed types which don't come around that often. Five is a bit to high in my opinion, but I'll give you at least two.

Need another pass rusher or two. Dansby I think will be gone after this year after miami resigns a bunch of guys to big contracts like Sean Smith, starks, Jake long and Reggie Bush just to name a few. So will need to replace Dansby. And if John Jerry continues to play well I think he's up for a contract too if I am not mistaken. I know the Dolphins have a load of players expiring this season. Also need a ballhawking safety to preferably replace Clemons. And need another corner. If Nolan Carroll somehow lights it up during the 2nd half of the season then need a really good 3rd corner (over 50% of the snaps there is a 3rd corner on the field with all the extra WR sets offenses run). I have no faith in Richard Marshall, he's just not good. If anything he should be a safety or backup safety , and he's average there at best (not a ballhawk type at all), kind of in the Tyrone Culver mole. Nothing special at all.
