Good general managers actually hit on large contract free agents from time to time. We've handed top contracts to the 3 i listed, Brandon Marshall, and Karlos Dansby. Of those 5, 1 has worked. Thats an 80% failure rate for top tier contracts, which sounds similar to his draft percentage failure rate.
This isnt like Ireland was hired this offseason. He was hired 5 years ago. We have had half a decade to work with. His bad faaaaaaaaar outweighs his good. If the most powerful position on the face of the planet(the Presidency) can be judged in 4 years, dont you think its fair to judge Ireland in 5?

Now, i know Ireland has earned your undying gratitude. I mean, he was hired, so that instantly made him the best general manager in the history of mankind in your opinion. I get it. No matter what he does he will be super awesome because his title has the words "Miami Dolphins" in it. But heres my question: dont you think the next general manager will be just as super awesome as this one? I mean, he to will be the Miami Dolphins general manager, and thats all you need for them to be considered wildly successful.

For me it has nothing to do with changing my views on Ireland, it has everything to do with the risk of losing Philbin. I bet that is a pretty popular opinion here.

And youre entitled to your views. So, now the conversation has switched to losing Philbin. When did this happen ? Last week ? Because just two weeks ago after the Jets game, Philbin was getting killed for icing the kicker. Dog, I get it, people are going to find every excuse possible now we might start to turn the corner.

If they could dump Ireland and keep Philbin I'm all for it. He should have been fired with Sparano. I have been very consistent with this since they hired Philbin and this debated started shortly after. May want to go back and check before firing generalizations.

With a young and talented TaNnehill on board, this off-season can be franchise defining. We hit on two playmakers and keep developing guys Sean Smith, Reshad Jones, we'll be Suoer Bowl contenders within 4 years if not less.

On the flip side, miss this off-season and we'll be pushing back our window at least another 2 years from where it should be. I'm weary of Ireland, but if he sticks around I hope a new sense of confidence will drive him to forego safe moves and go for high reward outside the box thinking. His problem is that he compares young talent to what is already in the NFL, i.e. "He looks like what you expect a good 3-4 DE to look like." However playmakers can have different measurables that aren't quantified by size/speed measurables. In any case, the better Tannehill,plays, the greater Ireland's job security. I hope he keeps listening to his coaches on talent evaluation, it seemed to have worked for Tannehill!

There is a possibility that Ross may be able to accomplish this. Dump Ireland and keep Philbin. Whether it is to promote Brian Gaine to GM or interview potential GMs who share similar views to Philbin and are willing to work with Joe. Maybe have Philbin re-interview for the job. Philbin wowed Ross once, I'm sure he can wow him again as well as whomever becomes the new GM.

Actually you would have to include Wake and Bush in there which by my count puts it at closer to 50%. As far as Marshall goes, how can you possibly say that was a failure? That is ridiculous, dude had 1200 yards last year. By my reading, Philbin had more to do with him being gone than Ireland. It is not a FA failure if Ireland gives the coach power to say who he wants on the roster. So by my count that is4 out of 7. You are being a little presumptuous....Ireland has been here for 5 years but you would be kidding yourself if Parcells didn't have the MOST say who they draft. Nobody has ANY idea who made those choices or how much control Ireland had. From the last 3 drafts Miami:
2010: 6 of 8 are contributors on this team including starters Odrick, Misi and Jones(who is looking pretty good)
2011: 4 of 6 are contributors on this team including Pouncy who is looking like a stud,
2012: 7 of 9 are on the team. The biggest and best choice he made in any draft was Tannehill based on early returns.

So by my count, that is 17 of 23 choices that are either key starters, key contributors, or in the case of this year showed enough talent to make the roster.

Anytime a WR catches the ball and has a wide open path to the end zone but somehow falls out of bounds is a failure.

Seriously, Marshall was not a good acquisition. His 2011 season along with his issues with the QB were a hindrance. I would have to put him in the fail column as well because the return did not equal the cost in terms of picks and salary.
