I can almost guarantee this is exactly how it went down a few days ago. And this is pretty much exactly what happened with the moon landing back in 1969.

You say that like a staged moon landing is such a radical thought. If we were so technologically advanced in 1969 that we could travel to the moon, why haven't we been back since? Surely technology has advanced over the past 40+ years, yes? The United States hated the Soviets back then and were set on getting to the moon first. Americans weren't even interested in space travel until Russia made it known that they would make a legitimate attempt at space travel. Not to be outdone by some drunk Russians, Americans quickly staged a bogus moon landing just to say they did it before Russia. I guess you "fake it until you make it".
