Ohio Super Pac urges Black Americans to vote Republican

In the final days of the campaign in Ohio, the stops have been pulled out in the scramble to eke out a win. And that means one super PAC calling on African Americans to vote against President Obama because Abraham Lincoln freed the slaves.

Cable viewers in several markets across the state are being treated to ads by an obscure self-described "alternative conservative" super PAC called the

And then there's the ad which one viewer told TPM is airing in the Columbus area on cable. Our source caught it a couple of times on MSNBC. That ad is the Empower Citizens Network spot that tells African Americans it's a "lie" that Democrats support them and cites the Emancipation Proclamation as evidence...

...."Among the claims made by the ad is that the Obamas throw lavish parties at the White House for "socialist friends" that include flying in $100-per-pound Kobe beef from Japan; the President's $800 billion stimulus did not produce any net jobs, and that "this deep recession was not caused by the Bush tax cuts, Republican lax regulation, or Wall Street greed."

Really? It's a Super PAC, not an ad by the candidate itself. Romney is doing just fine. There's a lot of money being thrown around by Super PAC's on both sides. By this rational I could say that Obama is getting desperate for votes as well.

Not to mention today's republican party doesn't come close to resembling that of the republican party in Lincoln's day. Hell today's republican party doesn't come close to resembling that of the Reagan era.

Even Bob Beckel groaned when he saw the MoveOn.org ad and said that it represented a fringe element of his Democratic party. I guess if you were raised on Jerry Springer, it's right up your alley.

So, yes, I am comparing the two because they both look like a "swing and a miss" by their respective Super PAC's in getting independent voters to side with their candidate. However, neither ad reflects any sort of desperation by either Romney or Obama, because they are not involved with making either ad. That was my point.

Here's a condensed history lesson.

I think what's being pointed out is that Democrats don't have the best interests of black minorities vs Republicans over the years starting with those who favored slavery and opposed Lincoln during the Civil War. Democratic Progressive Woodrow Wilson was a segregationist. The Dixiecrats of the late 1940's were segregationist Democrats.

Meanwhile, Republican Chief Justice Earl Warren's court ended segregation in schools in the the landmark case of the Board vs the Board of Education and the famous desegregation of Little Rock happened under Republican President Dwight Eisenhower.

During the Civil Rights movement of the 1960's, I give you Democratic Governor and segregationist (racist) George Wallace (in the 1980's he finally made amends). LBJ had to fight with this faction of his own party to get the passage of the Civil Rights Act. LBJ, meanwhile, was also an early proponent of affirmative action (created with good intentions) , but has been argued to be demeaning to minority groups (accepting them as inferior and need of assistance to compete), and also has created resentment from those in the majority who claim reverse discrimination (further flaming racial tensions). Furthermore, it has been argued that many progressive social welfare programs has resulted dependency issues among minorities (especially those that are impoverished).

His point is that the Republican party of Lincolns era doesnt even come close to resembling the current party, and to make ads asking people to vote for Republicans because of Lincoln comes across as desperate. Id also add idiotic but i dont want to put words in his mouth.

Your rant just proved his, and others, point. Current political parties in no way resemble historical political parties. Difference is, he is posting on a message board saying "really?" at the comparison while this Super PAC is burning millions of dollars to try and make the comparison. But thanks for providing evidence of their point for all.

Personally, i think the entire thing is hilarious. And not just for obvious reasons. I mean, if you have to go back to the civil war to find examples of equality for your party, doesnt that say more about your party then the example?(and yes yes yes, before you get cute, i get there were "newer" examples, im being facetious). I wish this Super PAC luck in its attempts to win some of the black vote. Lord knows Republicans have successfully discriminated against and alienated gays, women, hispanics, muslims, and others.
