Good article. It's not a shatteringly new analysis, but interesting nonetheless. It's very revealing Eric Cantor wasn't quoted in the Politico piece. He's the top voice for the "movement" conservatives in the House and in many ways pushes Boehner around on this purity stuff.

There's a reckoning coming, and it's going to be fascinating to watch it play out. One of the reasons I didn't pay quite as close attention to this election as I have in years past is that the Republican nominating fight four years from now holds so much more promise and drama by comparison (that's assuming Romney loses, which is what I think will happen).

That Republican nominee, whoever they are, will set the path for his (or her) party for years to come. Are the Republicans going to return to their Rockefeller/moderate roots, or give over the mantle to the young and severely conservative guns that make up most of their up and coming star power? My vote is on the latter. And that's why I think guys like Graham will ultimately rally around Rubio, who at this point has to be considered the early favorite. He's a "true believer" who's background gives him credibility on immigration reform, and he comes off as youthful, genuine and not at all scary.

But if the thing isn't handled carefully, it would not shock me to see a fracturing of the party and the first major third party candidate since 1992 (derived from whichever wing loses out). A whole library full of books is going to come out of that primary fight, enough to make the Democratic nomination fight in 2008 seem like the Smoot-Hawley Tariff.

As much as I'm ready to punch a baby the next time I see a campaign ad, a vital chapter in American history is getting set to play out in a few years. The poor people in Iowa and New Hampshire are only going to get two years off before these guys start making innocuous "trips" to talk about ethanol subsidies and rugged individualism.
