Lombardi: Phins/Tannehill enduring normal growing pains

However, as is often the case when rookies start at quarterback in the NFL, Tannehill hit a wall and the

Irish poet and playwright Oscar Wilde said it best back in the 19th century: "Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes." Tannehill and the

to have Tannehill lead the team this entire season; not because they worried about his talent level, but rather because they wanted to allow him time to grow into the game and adjust, since he was entering pro football with just 19 college starts at quarterback. But in this league, injuries force teams to make adjustments. When David Garrard went down early in training camp,

to three wins in the first six weeks. Not to mention, two of their three losses in that span occurred in overtime. It was clear: Tannehill was rapidly improving.
But suddenly, over the past three weeks, Tannehill has not progressed. He has hit the proverbial "wall" that all rookies hit. What is the wall and why do rookies hit it?
When a rookie starts at quarterback, defensive coaches have to prepare for anything and everything. But after five games the rookie signal-caller's strengths and weaknesses become crystal clear on the game tape. What types of throws he likes, what part of the field he targets the most, how he reacts to the speed of the game, how he handles pressure and how he performs under pressure. Because most rookies are limited in terms of the volume of offense at their disposal, defensive coordinators can get a good read on the young passer and take away what he does best. This cat-and-mouse game is much like a rookie basketball player who loves to go to his right all the time; naturally, the defense learns to force him left. How does he respond? Better question: Can he respond?

Teams now have a read on what Tannehill likes to do, as well as how the Fins have set up their offensive game plan around him. With limitations at wide receiver -- most critically, nobody who is able to stretch the field -- opponents have played more man-to-man against the

, taking away the easy throws. During the current three-game losing streak, Tannehill hasn't been able to make big plays down the field -- with only two plays over 25 yards -- and Miami has gone just 9-for-34 on third-down conversion attempts. Also, defenses have loaded up on the left side, as most teams realize Miami likes to run behind

to run the ball effectively and control time of possession.
All of these problems are interrelated and certainly not solely the fault of the inexperienced Tannehill. To understand the struggles of Tannehill -- or the effect of "the wall" -- is to understand the

-- and a learning experience for Tannehill. So while these past three losses are painful in terms of their playoff hopes, they also serve as a reminder of what Miami must do to improve.
    When the

can play their style -- which is playing from in front, stopping the opponent's run game and making a few big plays -- Tannehill will look like the best thing to happen to Miami since LeBron hit South Beach. But when they get behind early in games and fail to make big plays, they will struggle. This is the reality of where they are as an organization, so don't get down on Tannehill. Just know that as the team around Tannehill improves, so will he. He can break through this wall -- he just can't do it alone.

He may be struggling, as many expected he would have, but I attribute some of the blame to the playcalling as of late. The offense is just too predictable, everyone knows its to Bush on first down, and he usually loses yards. There needs to be more variety in the playcalling. Put freakin Miller and Bush on the field at the same time to keep defenses guessing, put Bess back in the slot for christ sakes, he has no business running on the boundary. That was a great catch by Matthews btw, we need more of that.

Yea, the play calling has definitely been very unimaginative. I don't see a whole lot of adjustments going on, or getting the ball to players in space to make plays. We don't see many yards after the catch. Disappointing.

Agreed. Playcalling has been awful imo, especially on 1st and 2nd downs.

It drives me nuts. Its arguably worse than dan hennings playcalling. 1st down run, 2nd down run, 3rd down short pass now punt

The last 3 weeks have been hard to take...partially because of the hot start we got off to. I personally bought into the playoff hype after the Jets game but reality has set in. Simply not enough playmaking talent on the team, combine that with the terrible play of the OL and RT17 doesn't really stand a chance right now...play calling needs to become more creative to make up for the lack of talent imo.

Yes, it does sound a little like that. But, we have all heard this message given countless times and packaged a million ways--young QB's need to play and gain experience. It doesn't matter who says it. We have heard it spun different ways by guys like Curt Warner, Stinky Schlereth, Dan Reeves, Mike Shanahan, John Gruden, Charlie Casserly, Michael Lombardi and Can Cameron among others. Consider that all of these are different ways to say the same thing with slightly different spins on them:

    * QB's develop quicker when the bullets are flying
    * in the long run it is better to take your lumps now and have your quarterback grow sooner
    * the fastest way for a quarterback to learn is to get thrown in and learn as he goes
    * the more time a quarterback spends in real games the earlier he can develop
    * for a young quarterback to grow into a quality starter he needs reps in game situations
    * every quarterback develops at his own speed, but whatever that speed is, it is slower holding a clipboard

These are all just differentways to express what almost every kknowledgeable football person knows--young quarterbacks learn faster through playing. We can all debate about perspective, confidence, mentoring, coaching, habits, fear, etc. But, Tannehill isn't playing with fear, he isn't losing confidence, he isn't developing bad habits, and his teammates still believe in him. I can see no reasons not to keep playing him.

Understandable, but they don't need to make mistakes as much as we can expect them to happen. When I look at Tannehill, I don't think to myself "I hope he throws a pick here because he'll learn for the future". I hope he learns in practice, I hope he learns in the film room, but I expect him to be a professional throughout and to want to not make mistakes. Lombardi's conveyance is totally off with that line and it throws off the entire article for me.
