Poll: GOP to blame if "fiscal cliff" talks fail

Negotiations with Republicans over the so-called "fiscal cliff" may be slow going for President Obama, but a new survey shows the president has the public on his side.

If Washington fails to avert the "cliff" -- triggering a series of spending cuts and tax hikes at the start of the new year, possibly dragging the economy into another recession -- most Americans, 53 percent, would blame congressional Republicans, according to a Pew Research Center poll. Just 27 percent would blame Mr. Obama, according to the poll, conducted Nov. 28 - Dec. 2.

More than three-fourths of Democrats say the GOP would be to blame, while 16 percent of Democrats would blame Mr. Obama or both sides. By comparison, 33 percent of Republicans agree that the GOP would be more to blame, and 62 percent say Mr. Obama would be.

This only matters because Congress wants to be relected. 20 years from now no one will remember the names of any of them, but we'll all remember the name of the President.

It's not a matter of if the Republicans will cave, it's only a matter of when.

Of course it's a matter of when. This is a unique situation because the senate and Presidency were literally just retained by the Democrats. This means that everyone in the country is well aware that the people are behind one party and not the other. Add to that the fact that it's well publicized how many filibusters the Republicans have used the past 4 years, and the American people, rightly or wrongly, have it square in their minds that the Republicans are being stubborn. All the power is in the Presidents hands at the moment...

Anyone who thinks Obama and the Dems are any more interested in reigning in spending and getting our fiscal house in order than Republicans is either wildly delusional or has their head buried so far in the ground they are learning Mandarin as a second language. The only real question is, who will bankrupt us and monetize our debt first ?

BTW....how come NOBODY mentions the fact that Obama has yet to have a budget passed in his entire term? Including the first 2 years when he had the House and Senate in his pocket?

In his speech, Romney faulted Obama for failing to pass a budget. He was correct that the two times Congress voted on the president’s budget requests, both times they were voted down. But the job of passing a budget resolution is not the president’s. That responsibility falls to Congress, and even then the president doesn’t sign it. As Ellis, our expert, put it: "The president has no role in passing a budget. The president can cajole Congress about passing a budget and advocate for positions and funding levels, but in the end, Congress approves the budget resolution for their own purposes." That’s the difference between this and other claims we’ve rated which blamed Congress for inaction on the budget.

Romney’s statement contains a grain of truth, in that two of Obama’s budget requests failed to pass. But citing those votes leaves a wrong impression -- namely that the votes were anything more than political theater. Romney omitted the more critical information that passing a federal budget is the job of Congress. Given all that, we rate his statement Mostly False.

When an entire party refuses to work with the President, not alot gets done. When filibuster stops being used rarely and starts being used on almost every bill, not alot gets done. When the President praises a bipartisan agreement and the GOP immediately bails on it, not alot gets done. When a minority leader announces his only intent is to make the President a 1 termer, not alot gets done. When one party tries to make sure voter turnout "never happens again" because they are upset at election results, not alot gets done. Believe it or not, the minority can cause hell even if they arent in power. Shocking.

The hilarious thing is, had Obama done what you are suggesting and taken a stronger hand in Congressional responsibilities, Republicans would be wailing from the rooftops about the diminishing of their power. Much like they are currently doing with Obama's suggestion on...well, the debt ceiling:

One of the most controversial measures in President Obama's opening bid on the fiscal cliff was a proposal to strip Congress of the power to approve the raising of the debt ceiling. "Congress is never going to give up this power,"

I know this is mental masturbation season for blaming Obama but Congress hasnt remotely done their job at all. In years. The Republicans in both houses made it their sole mission to slow down government to a halt. Congrats on their success. But they seem to have forgotten one small thing: Google was invented. And people can easily look up certain situations and see who tried to sabotage efforts to make agreements. Then again, they're "not going to be dictated to by fact checkers".
