It doesnt. And to the OP, we have a lot more than $40 million in cap space, and Starks will not cost $9 million a year, nor will Hartline command $7 million a year. And your average starting LT who is in his second contract is making $7-$9 million a season, not $5-$6 million a season. For the sake of having a real discussion, lets use real math.
Miamiron has a pretty accurate breakdown in another thread of what we would have left if we franchised Long his numbers on Hartline, Starks, Smith etc were much more conservative but he had a very low amount of money left in the lot at the end. As far as back loading I am pretty certain the new CBA eliminates that, but even if it doesn't backloading makes it very hard to get rid of a player at the end of a contract.

Zounds has a cap spreadsheet in the Cap Forum that is better than 99% of anything I've seen out there. There is one correction that needs to be made in the sheet with respect to Fields but other than that it is pretty much spot on.

Here's the deal, and the numbers are as close as anyone can get. Long is still there for accounting purposes.

Every team has a cap, time for us to manage ours well. There is no reason good adjustments can't be made in the offseason. Go Dolphins!
I support our new Coach and Quarterback. Go Miami! But they still have to prove they are the future, we've been fooled too many times!

That guy does good work. He's got a few errors, like Dansby's pro-rated sigining bonus, Soliai's bonus, and Fields's 2013 contract, but its a good starting point. And I think he just forgot to remove Jake Long.

Starks and Bush are the only ones I absolutely want back. The others are expendable if they want too much money

For a team that is going to win 5-7 games, I am not sure why people are so worried about getting all our FA's signed back. Some are good players and help our team. However, at the same time, there are many other players out there that can contribute what these FA's are doing.

They will not pay Starks anywhere close to that nor Hartline nor Smith. If that's where the bidding goes, they walk. You let Bush walk as well. You spend for Wallace and draft another WR, corner and DE high. Remaining cap money either goes to a CB, Long or a RT and move Martin permanently to LT.
Yes, they will. Starks is a good player. I expect Starks and Hartline to be the top priorities.

No way. Smith plays a much harder position to fill than Starks. I like Starks too, but at 29 and fmr. FA pick up, I say he walks. You found a "Randy Starks" before in FA, find the next one in the same manner or in the draft.

BTW, I think Odrick could put a few pounds and slide inside to DT.

    Starks does not return.
