If one side is able to argue from an idealistic point of view that guns can magically be uninvented (or criminals can magically be made to become law-abiding citizens) then why is the other side not allowed argue from the realistic point of view that doing things in a certain order (education then marriage then baby) generally makes for a better life for both the mother and child?

What i don't get...we teach sex ed in schools, we give a bajillion free condoms away, and teen pregnancy is still a problem. But teaching abstinence is still a bad idea?

States that prescribe abstinence-only sex education programs in public schools have significantly higher teenage pregnancy and birth rates than states with more comprehensive sex education programs, researchers from the University of Georgia have determined.

The researchers looked at teen pregnancy and birth data from 48 U.S. states to evaluate the effectiveness of those states' approaches to sex education, as prescribed by local laws and policies.

"Our analysis adds to the overwhelming evidence indicating that abstinence-only education does not reduce teen pregnancy rates," said Kathrin Stanger-Hall, assistant professor of plant biology and biological sciences in the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences.

Virtually every study has come to the same conclusion.

Learning exactly what the consequences of your actions are is a far better educational method than simply being told "dont do that".

Yeah...the teen pregnancy rate really reflects that , especially in the inner cities,

And btw, i don't endorse abstinence only, but as part of the whole curriculum in sex ed. Please don't put words in my mouth, or express ideas i have never expressed as my own.

The problem isnt that abstinence isnt taught or that condoms are given away or any other reason people conjure up. The problem is that lots of people are stupid. Thats just how it is. You can tell them not to have sex. They will still knock up each other. You can educate them and give them birth control. They will still knock up each other. A lot of people just simply dont care about consequences past the next 30 minutes.

Then it's not their fault, it's ours. We have failed our children, because we didn't care enough to teach them right and wrong, consequences and repercussions.

    How sad is that?

Actually, rates have dropped significantly, reaching an all-time low in 2011.

I don't give a damn. When my daughter gets old enough I'm putting her on the pill.
