Sean Smith has 5 interceptions and 3 forced fumbles in 4years
Casey Hayward has 6 interceptions and 1 forced fumble in his rookie season

15 games versus 62 games with almost the same production
CB stats are sometimes deceiving... sometimes the best stat for a CB is how little the ball is thrown his way, because he has his man covered...

with that said, Sean Smith couldn't catch a cold so far in his career... I remember there were back to back games he let an INT hit him square in the chest that would have put the game away for us...

I thought he would be an INT machine when I saw that pick he made in preseason vs the Saints. Boy was I wrong. He can apply pretty good coverage at times but he's awful when it comes to looking back for the ball.

Sean Smith isn't awesome. But has shown some bright spots. I would resign him for the fact that we really have no choice. We don't have anything better. Smith showed some promise and progress. I would see what happens next year.

overrated! we need to go after someone in FA this year and draft a CB in one of our first 3 picks. If we can sign him to a fair contract then great, but franchise? No way!

Lack of mental concentration has greatly affected this. Gus with limited mental make-up are a Jeff Ireland staple.

Sean smith is a very average cornerback and I hope we pay him as much. He is the only decent corner on this team

    if he doesn't play...

3 career INTs in 63 games started, attrocious tackling and inability to make plays on the ball - can't believe anyone is lobbying for his resigning... Wish the Colts had come asking for him...
He also has a ton of dropped Ints (I think he lead the league with like 7 or 8 dropped last year) obv that isnt good but that means hes in position to make the plays which is good if he could catch the ball completely diff story until then...............

I still think keeping Sean Smith is the most important guy to re-sign this offseason. Tough position to find and you never have enough.

Sean Smith has been a difference-maker in maybe 3 games of his 63. I understand that corner is the hardest position to learn, and it takes time, yadda yadda...

But really. This guy has had Wayyyy more bad plays than good ones, and like others in this thread, I don't see much else to him other than depth.
It's one thing if you want to keep him around, but franchise him / pay him handsomely? I don't think he's worth it. Even with this season being his "breakout" season as some would call it, he's regressed shortly after.

Shawn Smith brings the Ted Ginn physical style of football to the table. He drops interceptions for fear of getting hit. He is a liability in the run game for the same reason. That being said, he is average at a critical position and would create another hole with his departure.
