The Importance of a Free Safety

I don't think this has been all that hotly discussed, but I feel that FS is one of our primary needs coming in to this draft. Watching the Seahawks wreak havoc yesterday, one of the things that I noticed is the presence of Earl Thomas.

The 4-3 is incredibly reliant on a ball-hawk FS, and this draft is very deep with talent at that position. Reid, Vaccaro, Rambo, Phillip Thomas, Tony Jefferson, etc. With our allotment of picks, I'd suggest that it's imperative we pick one up in the top three rounds. If Reid is available in the top of the second, I'd even be okay with moving up to get him.

    Your thoughts?

Some of those guys on your list seem better suited as SS's . . . similar to Reshad Jones. I think Robert Lester did well at FS with Barron but seemed to play more of a SS role this year . . . he could be a guy that paired with Reshad could do some good things in the NFL.

I still think Miami has to look into moving Richard Marshall to FS. He was never a great CB but played well as a FS in Arizona. Chris Clemmons is a good safety net because he can backup both FS/SS . . . but I agree fully that we should attempt to upgrade the FS position.

Agreed; specifically Vacarro makes me wonder if he'll be a better SS. However, moving Marshall is specifically what I want to avoid. The point is that this defense needs a stud at that position, not an experiment.

Phillip Thomas is the best safety fit IMO...he is the closest thing to an Earl Thomas in the draft-but don't be surprised to see him rise up the boards and go in the first. I think it was CK who was hearing that he was being valued very highly by scouts around the league. I like Rambo a lot as well...kid makes plays.

In psychology, Stockholm Syndrome is an apparently paradoxical psychological phenomenon in which hostages express empathy and have positive feelings towards their captors, sometimes to the point of defending them. "[6]
