okay this is a post i flipflopped on posting, a) because ive been drinking...ALOT b) because im using a couple references that are pretty much no-no's madden and HS football.
i think everyone on here has discussed their displeasure on us NEVER seemingly using the screen. i was posting on main forum about players to retain yada yada yada, the same post every 3rd post. i was commenting about bring back jake long for his leadership. when i went outside to smoke i started thinking, players like long are why we cant run the screen.
pouncy and martin are the only two lineman i think our capable of hopefully helping us dominate on a screen pass. the play has to be able to develop to happen. i played DL for a powerhouse school (at the time) in NC. was always told if i got a free ride by the OL in front of me, to peel off and follow lineman or look for a helmet in the ear hole from a pulling lineman. ignore the qb and watch/follow the halfback. you see this in a lot of games where the DL peels off to trail the OL and blow up the screen. i always use wake on madden, if im free i know its going to rb on a screen, nobody runs the screen on me. the thing is, we have maulers on the OL still other than Martin and Pouncey, you dont mind a lil rush getting to QB from a DL who thinks he has a gimmie <sigh> but if you dont have the pulling speed from the lineman then you are not gonna be able to get the play set up before the 1 DL that actually trails gets over there. i like long cogs and jerry, but they just dont have the mobility i feel to pull fast enough down line to set it up and get squared up before the DLcan catch up. im sure the opponets DC's know that too so they dont overly worry about it.
this isnt gonna be fully fixed this season, i see jerry and cogs starting again on OL, with just a different RT (martin starting at left).
and the other screen (the bubble screen which i hate) honestly who can we run it to. once again ima bring up a little madden, sorry vip'ers. i was stoked when we drafted ginn, not for dolphin purposes but for madden purposes. on the game bubble screen to ginn meant pick my direction and with acceleration you were prob gone. it didnt exactly work out that way in real life cause teddy was scared of contact, but still potentially he's been our only potential great wr screen player in forever. with my roomie owning house and being a panthers fan , if both carolina and miami are playing at same time i get stuck watching panthers on big screen and dolphins on secondary tv (yes im sorry, live the poor life, two tv's in living room.....batchelor) they used to try to target steve smith all the time on the bubble screen....why cause he's fast and has the ability to make the first guy miss. with us, who do we wr or bubble screen too. hartline or bess both would other wise be negative yardage or 3 yards and hit the ground. i like both of them, but they are not bubble screen players. not too mention if we tried to do legit bubble screen instead of just the hot pass, long would've never been able to get over there in time to be an influence.
so pretty much what im saying, as much as i complain about us not utilizing the screen with us having bush in the backfield this offseason, and most others complaining about us not using it. i begin to think and really we prob didnt have the person to run it. MAYBE thats why sherman didnt run it, DL more athletic than OL, and just all and all slow players.
look forward to screen passes to miller behind and atheltic line in 2014
