Lets not get carried away accusing Smith of being a talent! Four seasons and how many real game changing plays did he make for us?
Hell id even be happy if hed play physical.... or at the very least turn to locate a ball..

Season ended last week.... they can negotiate until what, like March? has nobody here never been part of a negotiation before?

They are supposed to be far apart in what each side wants, thats how these things work, ALWAYS. the real question is how much money we are willing to invest in the just the cornerback position between Smith, Marshall, and Patterson... and to be honest, im not all that enthused about the entire trio one way or the other.

7 million a year might be what the market value for smith may turn out to be... but I have would be quite disappointed if thats what we ended up signing him for. There is absolutely a point to be made about not letting talent off your roster, but I happen to believe that overpaying for marginal talent just for the sake of keeping him and not "creating a hole" is the wrong method to building your team. Keeping someone who is servicable at best for a large salary will bite you in the ass in the long run.

The key is to acquire high level talent and then keep them, not overpay to keep mediocre talent, and Sean has proven to be servicable but mediocre.

7-7.5 mill a year is reasonable. Ireland can pull it down.

Dont get where people get that he is a physical corner. He runs from contact and couldnt shed a wr's block if his life depended on it. I'd rather do with Marshall and draft a cb. Smith isnt worth big money...no way.

Sean Smith is the most frustrating player to watch. Every time I see him he's getting beat and is out of position. He's a terrible tackler, and has the worst ball skills of anybody in the secondary. I have seen nothing to prove that he's an above average corner in this league.

Losing smith is going to be a major blow to the defense, he still has a long ways to go but he has developed into a solid corner. Wasnt there an article saying we were going to franchise him? He is no deoin sanders but a solid physical corner that has developed well you dont wanna lose him, add in the fact that for the last few seasons he has been the most durable healthy player on our defense, vontae was always hurt but not smith. Losing smith only creates a major hole on the team, right now we are set to be able to draft another Elite pass rusher to pair with cam wake, we need to continue to move forward, not backwards.

    Lock up
    smith
    Starks

anyone else is expendable but those 2 we cant lose.
You're going to be disappointed as they are likely both gone. I think you are overstating Smith's value. He doesn't play the ball well and can't cover smaller, quicker receivers. Whatever 'publication' speculated Miami might tag him needs to put down the pipe.

How many times have we watched the defense give up a long drive in the final minutes to lose a game? How many times on those drives did Smith give up a catch on third and long?
