Always good to hear what Barry Jackson has to say. He's my favorite Dolphins writer. If only they could all be this good.

I think Ireland has coached Ross up perfectly in the art of smoke screens. Everyone knows the Dolphins need to address the wide receiver position, but the Dolphins are downplaying free agency not to look desperate. There is no doubt that Miami will take a run at the big name free agent receivers this offseason, buy if you say you will now, those players and agents can use that to drive the price up.

This regime and this franchise quite frankly don't have the luxury to pass on what the Mia fan base wants anymore.Ireland tried doing things his way, it hasn't worked, he's not bill bellichek where everything he does right or wrong Is praised because he has a winning record. Ireland is a loser, this franchise has been falling apart for quite some time, now, like it or not, this regime needs to get a WR in free agency. The possible contract well be handing out does scare me. Desperate teams I'm free agency rarely work out for the better. But I still want Wallace.

Ross can do whatever he wants its his money to waste and if alienating the fan base is no a big issue to him then so be it. I just love how he wants the taxpayers to foot half his bill and yet hasnt made a real commitment to putting a winning team on the field

He hasn't made a real commitment? You realize he only makes money if the fans are happy, right?
How is denying the obvious a smokescreen. These players know we dont have receivers, they know we have cap room, we dont have much control to keep their price down unless we just say no.

The Dolphins can always go the draft route to find receivers. Now, that isn't the ideal route to satisfy the fans but it could be used as a leverage in contract negotiations. It is a chess match and the Dolphins are playing it perfectly right now. No need to show your plans in January. You say you want to build through the draft, yet leave all options on the table without tipping your hand. That is how you play the game at this point in the offseason.

Buddy Nix for the Bills has been going public since December that the Bills will draft a quarterback. Big mistake, now everyone knows for sure what the plan is and you could see a lot of draft day movement to try and swoop in and steal QB prospects from the Bills. The Dolphins played it perfectly last draft when they downplayed Tannehill leading up to the draft. As Ireland revealed after the draft, he had been scouting Tannehill for years and fell in love with him as a prospect years prior to the draft. Yet Ireland went out in front of the public and said they wouldn't be taking a quarterback just to take one. They also trotted Sherman out in front of the media and he downplayed the team's interest. Brilliant.
Any public statements from any Dolphins member whether it is Ross, Philbin, Ireland, Gaine, Sherman, etc. should be take with a grain of salt. It is all smoke screens and misinformation at this point. Remember prior to the 2008 draft when Ireland said that the first round pick would be a pillar of the defense for years to come? Brilliantly played.

How is saying the first round oick would be a pillar of the defense for years a brilliantly played smokescreen. What did we gain, we had the first pick. A smokescreen should actually be used to gain something like making people think we are gonna take another position to gain something. Smokescreens are so overrated because in reality it gains u little. There are teams that can pay these receivers and us acting like we might draft a receiver will not affect their price at all.
