Agreeed, $6-7 million per year is pretty reasonable for an average starting CB who is still young and entering his second contract.

My only issue is the length of 6 years. I think signing a 3 or 4 year contract would be ideal for Miami, or at least being able to void the last 2 years without consequence.
    agreed.

Smith is still very immature, I can see him getting his 6 year deal and feel like he doesn't have to put forth a great effort... I wouldn't be apposed to giving him 6-7million a year, but I would set up the contract like you suggest, this way he has that "better perform or forget getting next years 7 million" looming over his head.

My contract for him was 5 years and 32.5 million (6.5 million per) so the numbers, though a little north of where I have them, aren't bad. I do agree it would be nice to throw in an easy out in case it just goes downhill with Smith but overall I honestly was expecting a starting point around 9 or 10 million so to see only 7.16 million as a starting point is a relief.

I don't think 7 mil is unreasonable and I wouldn't be opposed to resigning him for that. But you also certainly have to weigh the options and see where the market lies and how he compares to some of the guys coming out this year in the draft. Maybe you use that 7 per year to help sign a Michael Johnson. Then you can draft a Milliner (if there) or Banks in the 1st. Or look at Trufant, Rhoades, Poyer, Hawthorne etc in the 2nd.

We need to be looking CB in this draft whether we resign him or not. We just aren't very solid at CB.

I'd resign Smith, extend Carroll while he's still cheap as he is a good option as a #4 CB on the boundary, one that is still trying to improve every year and then I'd draft a guy like Trufant in the 2nd round and figure out between Patterson, Marshall and whoever else we tried back there who I'm keeping as my #2/#3 guy to battle with Trufant. Jimmy Wilson still a wildcard but not one I'm depending on. He sticks as that CB/Safety/Special Teamer for now.

Agree with the folks that think signing in the 6-7 ballpark is reasonable. Those who say let him walk, are destined to miss him next year.

Miss him getting dominated by elite receivers and missing tackles? No thanks.

Pure Fiction . . . if anything he plays his best games against elite WR's. He's probably never going to be a standout tackler but he has come a ways from his rookie season.
