It's disturbing of how much of a team mentality is lacking, and escaped their egos... unbelievable.
That has long been the case in top-flight professional sport. When we are talking millions of dollars, pounds or euros, you can forget about any concept of loyalty or team. Those concepts are great when you are earning what you feel you "deserve", but as soon as you get a better offer from elsewhere it is bye-bye time. When free market economic theory become the driving force of a sport, like all American pro sports, soccer and increasingly rugby, you can forget about such idealistic notions.

$10 million isnt surprising, and just because that's what he asks for doesnt mean that's what he is going to get. So he asked for $10 million, and we are going to just say "see ya"??? Thats probably the worst negotiating tactic a GM could use. We dont have to let him walk. The GM (or the market) will just have to talk him into less money.

so if you get rid of Long and Smith, then how do you build on anything from last year? the whole point of this offseason is to build on the building blocks from 2012. Franchise Long-until Miami can re-evaluate themselves for 2014

Hell no. 15 mill hit to the cap will inhibit us from getting any FA's. I'd prefer to give him 11 for 2 years over that.

We need to try to negotiate down to 9-8 a year but he can probably get 10 elsewhere.

If you think $15mil inhibits a team with $50mil of cap space, not to mention can easily create more by a few restructured contracts, you need to go back to school and learn basic math again. Tagging Long will have zero impact on inhibiting us to sign the players we need. None. Not to mention it puts us in the position we put ourselves in with Solia or can easily fetch us a high pick at that. Long is at the very "least" getting the tag, if not re-signed. Bank on it.

The Miami Herald reports free agent LT Jake Long is believed to be seeking at least $10 million annually, and that the Dolphins are "pessimistic" about their chances of re-signing him.
$10 million is hardly prohibitive for a top-flight left tackle, but Long has been anything but that the past two seasons. However, he'll still only be 28 in 2013, and there should be no shortage of teams willing to gamble on a return to form if he reaches the open market. The Dolphins are believed to be unwilling to offer Long more than $6-$7 million per season. There's a long time between now and free agency, but Long is looking less and less likely to remain in Miami with every passing day.

thats a lot of money. It's bothersome that all our FA's are demanding so much.
Is this you or ROTO talking? "No shortage of teams willing to gamble" by paying him $10M+??? All I know is you better not be gambling with $10M of your salary cap. Let him walk.

the tag on long could absolutely impact our ability to do other things in free agency...$15 mil for one year on a guy who has trended down the last 2 years and finished the last 2 seasons on ir is assanine...
hoops scoops...prospects mia should target top 4 rounds 2013 draft...

You raised one point and then argued a different one. What kind of splash do you think Miami is planning on making? Do you think we are planning on signing Jennings, Bowe, Wallace, Bennett, Byrd, Flacco, Clady, Cromartie, Cook, Reed, and a Keller to boot? No. Miami is likely signing one big name receiver and a few mid tier guys. Maybe one more big name guy, tops. Long's tag number will do absolutely nothing to impede that. With a few restructured contracts Miami can have up to $60mil if they so needed. Long's contract is merely a long term vs franchise tag vs can we net us a good pick by doing so ordeal. Affecting us signing the players we need this offseason? Uh, uh. None.
