1st round WR Ranking

It might be a bit of a gamble fellas but I look at numerous mock drafts and many of them have C. Patterson and Keenan Allen going late in the first round, instead of around #12, where we pick.

Do you think it me be best to try and trade down maybe 3 to 8 picks and try to pick up another pick? Maybe an extra second or third rounder? I think Patterson or Allen could easily be there at #20 and if there is not a lot of difference between the two, we could maybe grab one of them later. What you think??? There might also be another WR besides Allen and Patterson who shines in the Combine who might be worth a look.

Trading down is definitely something I would consider depending on who goes 1-11. I don't believe Patterson will be available at #20, he might go before #12. However Allen might. DeAndre Hopkins is someone to watch at the bottom of the first. In the second round I'm looking at Justin Hunter and Aaron Dobson. Dobson could be a nice pick up.

My thing with Harper is that when I watch him, he doesn't look like a sub-4.5 guy. He really struggles to create separation, and he's less than 6'1. For the style he plays, I think he has to be a couple inches taller. Although, I could see him resembling a present-day A. Boldin. Again, though, present-day A. Boldin doesn't run a sub-4.5 (4.71 combine time).

He turned some heads at senior bowl. I read last night how he was a qb and asked to play wr early. He is a little raw in some aspects but then again, so is patterson.

that guy's upside is just a tad bit overdone. ted ginn like. big returner. never showed anything diversity wise as a receiver imo. his speed is overhyped.

his thing is yac & open field moves. I would rather have allen as showed more as a complete wr. but in the end, philbin will be taking good looks at guys like harper who translate well into pros without hype.just work for it,not live off hype.

i think its not only possible, but very likely if we take someone else. patterson is being projected to us and no one else but maybe minnesota

I too have Hopkins ranked high. I have Cordarelle Patterson as my #1 WR, followed by Deandre Hopkins at #2. I'd rather have Hopkins over Keenan Allen. In fact, I like Terrence Wheaton better than Keenan Allen and have Wheaton ranked as my #3 WR. After Patterson, Hopkins, and Wheaton... I can give you Keenan Allen. My #5 WR? I have like 5 of them ranked equal with Woods, Bailey, King, Patton, Hunter, and a few others.

But if we land either Patterson or Hopkins then I want a Wheaton, Austin, or Goodwin type to compliment that selection. This way, either Patterson or Hopkins learns along with Rishard Matthews under Jennings' wing and the speedster little guy like Wheaton or Austin can learn under Bess' wing in the slot.

I love how everyone puts speed as a priority for a top tier receiver, then ignore the fact that Jerry Rice, the best wr of all time, was not a world class burner. How about work ethic? How about dedication? Theres a reason Usain Bolt , Tyson Gay and Carl Lewis didn't play in the NFL. It's a skill set and a mind set too.

How fast was John Taylor and how much might that have cleared the intermediate zones where Rice made his living?

That is a question btw. My sense is that Taylor was fast, but I never have cared for or about the Niners.

Beyond Taylor/Rice, there was Harper/Irvin, to a lesser degree, though Clayton was fast, there was also Duper/Clayton. In my mind, you need at least one credible threat with true speed, if for no other reason than to clear the zones for your slightly slower possession guy.

I'm more giddy about this draft than when we had the #1 overall. We finally have a QB and are going to add playmakers with lots of ammunition.

If Justin Hunter makes it to the 2nd round I'm really hoping we pull the trigger. That guys upside is as high as any WR in this draft IMHO. His lift and extension is unequalled in this draft and may come close to that of Megatron's lift and extension, although Hunter's strength and hands are not nearly as strong. When healthy, Hunter would run in the 4.4's, but at the Combine he will not be fully back to top speed so I'd guess around 4.5 and many teams will underestimate his deep speed. He has a lot of areas of improvement, like strength, concentration, bulk/health, etc., but he's got phenomenal physical gifts, runs good routes, blocks willingly and effectively, plays hard, is willing to give full effort over the middle, was well tutored in the fundamentals at Tennessee, and will have a chip on his shoulder after he sees other WR's taken before him in the draft. He is an instant red zone threat, instant deep threat, and a guy with AJ Green type physical skills. I doubt he makes it to the 2nd round, but if he does, some team is going to be very excited about grabbing him.

If we trade down, I'm hoping we trade with Cincinnati. We could give the #12 and receiver the #21 and #37 and grab two excellent fits instead of one.

Taylor was one of the very fastest WR's in the league and definitely the guy who scared coverage deep. That was the dilemma facing teams back then. Defenses were built to stop the run and the deep pass, and if they tried to use run stuffing LB's on RB's and TE's it didn't work. If they single-covered Taylor deep, they'd get burned because Taylor was the Mike Wallace of his day but bigger and with excellent hands.

So, Rice had the area beyond the LB's and in front of the S's to exploit. He easily created separation because of his guile, technique, and burst. He ran great routes and set up his DB's well. Once he had separation, his accurate QB delivered the ball and Rice was a fantastic RAC guy. The WCO was in its infancy and Rice was the greatest WCO WR of all times, so it was a crazy mismatch every game they played.

Duper was probably faster than Taylor, but it's like comparing CJ2K to Wallace, they're both so deadly fast that safeties wake up in cold sweats the entire week before playing them. As much as it pains me to admit it, Rice and Taylor were clearly better than Clayton and Duper. San Fran also had the better TE, RB, FB and OL, truth be told. Oh yeah, and they're defense was a lot better than ours too.

I agree that Dobson could be a steal. Good deep speed and size. I think he'll be around in the third round.
