Did you really suggest a franchise tag for Smith?

Yes I did but I would still prefer to tag Jake Long. The tag is a one year hit... if Smith doesn't improve we let him walk next year.

What the stats say is he doesn't make many plays and gives up a high number of completions. You don't tag that.

You're going to be disappointed. Neither will get it. Zero chance on Smith and very little on Jake.

It's just like Hartline - just because he played the role of the #1 CB or #1 WR doesn't mean he warrants that kind of salary. Could Sean Smith improve? Sure. But I'm not going to pay him $7M+/yr to find out.
Exacccccctly. There are other options and better ways to spend the cap space.

I don't see it. I mean for $3-4 million a year sure, but not $10. That's the type of money Mike Wallace is looking for and he is a difference maker.

Here's the thing about tagging Smith or Long:

If they do produce like you hope they will, you'll be paying them more. So it's really betting against yourself. You can get Lewis or Grimes for around the same price as Smith. Lewis is the best CB on the market by a comfortable margin. With Grimes, you have to worry about injuries, but I'd rather hope a guy can stay healthy than hope a guy learns how to play football.

Adios Smith! There are better ways to spend that money. He can go to the Colts and team up with Vontae. Buh-buy!

I liked when they drafted him. Kid had size that they didnt have at that position in a long time. Thats all he ended up having. Turned into a disappointment. Must've left his hands in that preseason game his rookie season. Time to move on. Plenty of really good corners in this years draft.
