"I don't have pet peeves, I have psychotic ****ing hatred"
Wow. I've been saying 5 INTs in 64 games all over this site for at least a month. I was wrong - it is 63 games. The statistics show nothing. 12 PD? Andre Goodman had like 20+ the year before he left for Denver. 5 INTs in 63 games = SUCKS C-CK. The only stat that surprised me is that he forced 3 fumbles this year - nice. But the body of work suggests what I've been pounding the table top about for what seems like forever now:
- He can't catch
- He can't cover
- He gave up the most first downs and TDs of any starting corner in football last year
- He tackles like a pansy
- He tweets too much for someone who doesn't make any plays
- He has yet to make a game-altering play in his career. Here's a challenge - find a single INT, FF, sack (oh wait - he has zero in his career), TFL or tweet that turned the tide of a game. It is far easier to find moments where he failed us such as:
- Whiffing on Jake Locker on a 3rd and long that kept a crucial drive alive against the Titans this year
- Being in perfect position to intercept the ball on TY Hilton in the EZ but for some reason just stood there and watched a bad throw fall into the hands of a WR we had almost a foot height difference on
- Intercepting two balls in a single game against AZ...but...getting burned on the winning TD - a 4th and forever throw from Kevin "corn on the" Kolb with no time left in regulation - took a bad angle on the ball.
The AZ game for me is how you sum this guy up. Even in the rare occassion that he does something well (like 2 picks in a game) - the only thing you remember about his play that day was getting beat on the winning TD from a crap QB, on 4th down, from about 15 yds out with no time on the clock, etc - what is that saying, "this guy can snatch defeat from the jaws of victory"? That's Sean Smith - natural born LOSER!!!
GOOD RIDDANCE SEAN!!! GO SUCK SOMEWHERE ELSE!!!
Revis stopped getting interceptions after his third season because teams stopped throwing it at him entirely. Does that mean Revis sucks because he stopped putting up stats? Stats for a CB can sometimes be like stats for a NT - the effects don't show up.
Sean Smith isn't on Darrel Revis level, not even close to it. But *sometimes* there is an explanation for why you don't see a lot of big stats. And Sean Smith was routinely playing against the #1 WR on the opposite team and almost always holding his own.
Do you guys remember how AWFUL our pass defense was SUPPOSED to be? Like, just one off season ago, people were freaking the **** out on this message board - you don't remember? After we traded Vontae people were losing their ****, and rightfully so... we didn't have many pieces. But Sean Smith did a halfway decent job against the #1's of other teams... so much so that our pass defense ended up being mediocre instead of atrocious.

Can't disagree with any of this. And he doesn't deserve the money he wants. ... But once he goes, the secondary gets even worse (bad as that sounds).

The weakest parts of this team are wr and db. And considering we are on the verge of losing our "top" player at each of those positions (as mediocre as they both are) it's troubling. Not only will we need to replace each of them (both No. 2s, in my opinon) but we need to find No. 1s as well.
That's why, if the price is right, we should keep both.
Most people who want to keep Sean Smith feel he should be kept at the right price - same with Hartline.
Most people who say we should get rid of both talk about both players like they aren't worth the veteran minimum.
if the numbers we have been reading about are true, the price is definitely not right.

I know there is nothing better to talk about during the off season, but the free agents are always going to aim high - it's called negotiation tactics. Hartline would love $7mil/season but expects to get offered $4mil/season - the negotiation should land him somewhere in the $5-5.5mil/year range - all because he aims high.
If Sean Smith aims for $5mil/year he'll get $4 million. So what does he do? He aims for $9-10 and plans to settle for $7-8mil/year.
It's negotiations, nothing more. He will get about $7-8mil/year, which is what a good #2 CB should be paid (and whether some like it admit or not, that is what he is).
I understand but Smith has never had the INTs or turnovers. Revis had the one year where he didn't get picks. Then the next year he had about 10 or something. Comparing these guys is like comparing John Skelton to Aaron Rodgers...
All I can say is, "Where's the Beef"? He is "turnover" D-phicant! Not a good value for his $ demands
I don't think he's worth the money he'll get elsewhere.
