Roddy White

Why is he available? This is purely speculative. I’ve heard no rumors about the Falcons shopping Roddy, but before free-agency or the draft has even started the Falcons already have 113 million dollars commited to next year’s 120 million dollar cap. Having said that, the Falcons are in a bit of a pickle as they’d like to resign Sam Baker, William Moore, & possibly Brent Grimes all to nice new long-term contracts if they could. Not to mention that Matt Ryan is in the final year of his contract & they probably want to lock him up sooner rather than later. So in order to clear some space, Mike Turner, Peria Jerry, & Dunta Robinson might all be candidates for being released, & with Roddy having a 9.125 million dollar cap figure in 2013, maybe it’s possible that with the emergence of Julio Jones they might feel comfortable in parting with his 9 million dollar cap figure & stock-piling a few draft picks (aka inexpensive rookies) in the process.


Why would the Dolphins be interested? Roddy’s obviously very talented, & has been a consistently productive receiver every year since 2007. He’s also a dude that can put it in the end-zone For the right price, he’d be an automatic, legitimate wide-receiver for Ryan Tannehill from day one. His contract does expire in 2014 so it’s not like we’d be locked into any long term ridiculous contract, & while his 9 million dollar cap hit in 2013 is a bit high, it’s much more reasonable the following year at 6 million in 2014. Roddy’s currently 31, & when his contract expires he’ll be about 33. After two years of living in Miami, we might at that point have the inside-track at resigning him in 2015 if we desire to do so.

I'm not a Miles Austin fan. I'm not impressed by Maclin and I don't care for Washington. We want someone who will grow with Tannehill, and given the rich depth of WR prospects through the end of round 3, we should have no trouble finding a good prospect or two. I see no reason to throw resources in trade for sub-par WR talent.

Percy Harvin, maybe, but he's a head case and a medical risk, so I suspect both Philbin and Ireland would have too great of reservations to give up enough value to get him. Victor Cruz, yes, but I doubt he's really available. Of the older crowd, the ones that make the most sense are the FA's like Jennings and Wallace, so I see us persuing them and not offering a trade.

He's not a WR, but it might be worth discussing the TE's like Finley as well? I could see that being more likely for Ireland & Philbin than a WR this offseason. Not sure whether he's going to be available or not though.

I just don't see a trade that makes sense for us given the talent where we have lots of draft picks and money for FA's that make very good sense for us. Trading for a pass rusher or OL, maybe, but we have too many WR options that are low-hanging fruit for us this offseason. It's nice for a change.

how often do guys actually get traded in the nfl who are making legitimate money??? not very...most the time guys are cut when their cap # is well inflated over their true value...most teams hang on to their good players in their prime...thus they have them signed to long term contracts...rices hip is not something you just blow off and considering how many problems it has given him you can bet that anyone who considers him in trade would weight the risk vs that inflated $8.5 mil #

frankly i don't see much of anything impactful coming our way at the position in trade...it's free agency or draft imo...might get a #3 or #4 type but whats the use in that...the rosters loaded with em

cant get my head around trading for a wr with the top 3 wr`s in fa available and some very good talent around the 2nd round in draft
to me if ur not going to trade for johnson or fitz [which is out the question i really cant see the point]

imo we have more chance in trading our own wr in bess if we keep hartline and add a fa wr

Austin would be my go to, its a situation that makes to much sense. But i'll give it a go regardless.

Mike Williams, Tampa Bay

Why is he be available? While Tampa kept their general manager, Williams was drafted during the Raheem Morris era. Greg Schiano has made no attempts to hide the fact that hes putting his own stamp on that franchise. He traded away Kellen Winslow and Aqib Talib despite both players being acquired with high draft picks. Schiano invested a first round pick into Doug Martin and wasnt afraid to hand the ball off, which will likely stay a focus of his offense. When throwing it down field its clear Schiano is interested in getting the ball to his other high profile acquirement: Vincent Jackson. The combination of offensive focus and having a similar player already under contract might make Tampa to hesitant to extend Williams, who is entering the final years of his rookie deal. While they do have cap space, they need to rebuild their defense and invest in other positions. If given the choice between letting Williams walk for free or getting draft picks in return, i believe Tampa would choose the draft picks.

Why would the Dolphins be interested? Jeff Ireland investigated Williams heavily during his draft. I believe the courtship even got so far as Williams meeting Parcells and Sparano. All of this was rendered moot when we traded for Brandon Marshall right before the draft. While Williams will certain demand a healthy contract, i dont believe he will be making unreasonable demands. By all accounts, he has been a quintessential teammate in Tampa, never voicing any complaints about his ever evolving role. In all likelyhood he will come cheaper then any of the free agents available, which would be incentive for Ireland.

Kudos. Mike Williams was originally my third along with Jeremy Maclin & Nate Washington, when I did this thread on another board a month ago.

He would still be there except I've heard somewhat reliably the Bucs are actually and sincerely trying to lock him up long term.

No kidding. That's why he'd be cheap. But at least he's got the chance to be something when he's healthy. Guys like Steve Breaston or Nate Burleson or Nate Washington are basically like getting rid of Brian Hartline to get another Brian Hartline. Washington's a cut above that group but Kenny Britt's problems are probably going to keep him in Tennessee for the time being.

Ford averages 17 yards per catch, would cost essentially nothing and would fill a niche the Dolphins are obviously looking to fill in a legit deep threat. You'd have to check out the Lisfranc stuff (he's injured it two years in a row now) which could be disqualifying, certainly, but it's a matter I'd give attention to.

I'll throw out a more prominent name:

SIDNEY RICE

Why is he available? He's overpaid in Seattle's run first scheme, with only 50 catches for 748 yards and seven touchdowns last year despite signing a 5 year, $41 million deal in 2011. He led the team in receptions but from watching every snap of Seattle last year I thought Wilson clearly had better chemistry with Golden Tate, especially down the stretch. Rice's ability to go up in one on one situations and make tough catches is a good fit for Seattle's play action, down the field passing game, but there are cheaper options out there than Rice, who's set to make $8.5 million each of the next two years. Rice has missed time each of the last three years and has seen his YPC drop slightly over that time (it was still a very respectable 15 last year), so Seattle might be ready to part with him and invest a high draft pick in a WR (they're loaded at most other positions).

Why would the Dolphins be interested? He's only 26 (a few months younger than Brian Hartline, actually. He came into the league at like only 20 years old). He's played in a West Coast system most of his career if not all of it and has shown that his high note is pretty damn high (see: 2009). Philbin would have seen Rice at his best that year and would know from his friends on the defensive staff at Green Bay what kind of challenges Rice presents. The GM of the Seahawks, John Schneider, is a veteran of Green Bay's front office when Philbin was coaching there, and we know the Seahawks people are friendly enough with the Dolphins people that they all had dinner together with Ryan Tannehill in the lead up to the 2012 draft. Rice is tall but sort of slight (6'4, 200) and doesn't have major drop issues that I know of (someone with a PFF subscription could check on this). Despite his lankiness he shown the ability throughout his career to body up and make tough catches in traffic, which can help a young quarterback. He's not a burner but he has a way of getting open deep, which shows in his YPC numbers.

Love this idea. Not sure it's totally likely (maybe none of this is), but I still like the idea.

These trades are not common but they do happen. Every year. Dismiss the point of the thread if you want to but burrowing down on the details can reveal reasons why one of this guy or that might at least theoretically get traded here rather than just being stunned about it when it happens.

The Dolphins, after all, are the team that traded for Brandon Marshall for high picks and gave him big money, then traded him away for not quite as high picks, and then traded away Vontae Davis when he had two years left on his deal. If there's a team out there willing to do this kind of thing it's as likely to be the Dolphins as anyone.

There is not a SINGLE WR going into free agency this year that does NOT have injury/health concerns. If a guy is healthy, teams will do almost anything to keep an elite WR on their roster. When they are letting him go quietly, you can mark it down that he's damaged goods and/or has exceeded his mileage.

This is why #12 CANNOT be anything but a brand-new, healthy, fresh, elite WR all our own. There are linemen and defensive players everywhere.

The two I've been thinking about over the last couple of weeks are Austin and Mike Williams. The rationale already discussed better than I would have.

A longshot might be one of the 2 headline Denver WRs. They're close to full at the cap, they need €10m for Clady. There's a few other decent starters to sign - including the ageless Stockley - and they need to urgently restructure Manning, Bailey, Dumveril and Williams, because their cap figure for next year could be way over. They won't have much room, if any, for signing other teams' free agents. Decker and Thomas have a year left on their contracts and 2014, as I said promises to be a big squeeze for them, salary-wise. There is going to be some pressure in their FO to make the numbers balance over the next season.

They need a big DT. While the draft is deep with DT talent, they need somebody to contribute asap. Might they take a Pro-Bowler in Paul Soliai and a mid-round pick for Decker? We could re-sign Starks, slide Odrick inside and work on the DE position in the draft or FA. No doubt about it, Denver will have to plug that gap in the draft - a draft also deep with WRs. We would need to add a DT or DE, depending on our plans for Odrick.

Decker would be an awesome signing for Miami. He's a sure-handed polished receiver with a big endzone presence - basically everything we're lacking.

It's a trade both teams could walk away from feeling pretty happy about. Those are the trades that have a fighting chance.

austin makes sense...anything more than a 5th round pick for nate washington is a no go...and he's not getting you over the hump either way...doubt philly would trade maclin with desean jackson only wanting to play sometimes

I was working in south Jersey last month & listened to 97.5 the Fan out of Philly every day & once Chip Kelly was announced as the head coach the big topic, aside from Vick/Foles, was trading Maclin because he didn't fit Kelly's system. He lacks explosion for someone that was a big play receiver at Mizzou in college.

Hahaha....hey you don't have to go so far to leave this board....we need your posts here and in the draft area!!! I just keeping reading that the Giant's GM (Mara), keeps saying, "We would love to sign Victor Cruz to a long term deal BUT we also have to sign other players"....he also said Victor is asking for too much. I think the Giants are in a similar position that we were with Wes Welker around 2008, when we wanted to sign him but we waited too long and eventually he got a better offer. I think Cruz becomes a restricted free agent next year, so the Giants would get a first round pick if someone else signed him. I also like the post about maybe going after Roddy White....the Falcons have all kinds of wide receivers so he might become too expensive for them to keep.
