If I read the cap page, we would get about $200,000 in cap room from cutting him now. ($810,000 salary savings - $610,000 dead cap.)
I assume we would also have a $3 million cap charge next year from accelerating the rest of his signing bonus, but what do the base salaries look like in the rest of that contract?

His release saves no cap space. His bonus amortization from 2006-2009 accelerates onto 2006 cap
How much of a hit would it be? And would it save us money in the long run as opposed to cuting him next year?

According to NFLPA, Howard's base salary is $2 million, not $1 million. We don't have to pay him that if he's not on our roster for opening day. And if we dump him early enough in the offseason, we don't have to pay him the 2006 roster bonus.
Yes the base salary for next year is $2 million. I looked at the wrong cell. That yields a $1 million cap savings if he is traded or release on or before 6/01/06.

If Howard is released before the roster bonus and the regular season base salary are paid his cap charge is still part of Team Salary until he is released because at $4 million it will be part of the 51 highest contracts charged starting the first day of the New Year.
So his cap charge of $4 million comes off but then the dead money of $3 million is charged.
The net savings will be a little less because the 52nd highest salary would replaced Howard's and whatever that contract is in effect reduces the cap savings. It's usually in the $305k range.
Yeah, but we still owe him the amoritized bonuses for the remainder of his contract which would still be a $3 million cap hit for 2006. So would we save anything? No. Plus we would still need to "$ADD$" another salary on top of that to replace him which would be even more money against the 2006 cap space. Our best bet is to talk to him about re-structuring and keep him as the 5th CB behind "Madison's replacement" (which we can add with the $3.4 million we can free up by cutting Madison after June 1st to help sign), W.Poole, T.Daniels, and S.Mitchell.
