Dolphins Full of Rising Stars PDF Print E-mail

ROBERTO'S FIN FRIDAYS
Dolphins Full of Rising Stars

First, I would like to start by apologizing to everyone who takes their time to read this column. I was having issues with my PC after it crashed and had to get it fixed. That problem is solved and now it is time to get back to business. A lot has happened in the last three weeks. The Dolphins lost two home games to their division rivals, the New York Jets (a close one) and the New England Patriots (special teams disaster!). They then traveled to Green Bay, one of the toughest atmospheres in football, and beat the Packers in overtime with a Dan Carpenter winning field goal. We have learned these Dolphins have a ‘Jekyll and Hyde’ personality, they are road warriors, but are 0-2 at home. During all of this, I have seen a ton of individuals shine and I have come to the conclusion that the Dolphins have a roster filled with up and coming talent.

.

Ever since his arrival from Hawaii and being signed as an undrafted free agent, Davone Bess has become one of the best slot receivers in the league. His work ethic is unmatched, he is a third down converting machine, an excellent route runner and catches everything thrown his way. This young man's play has been so good that it was no surprise that he signed a three year contract extension last week. It is Bess' consistent play and hard work that has gotten him where he is today and there is no doubt that Davone Bess is one of the many rising stars on the Dolphins roster.

.

Who can forget about Brett Favre's comments about Vontae Davis? Brett Favre called Vontae Davis one of the best cornerbacks the NFL hasn't heard about yet. Favre continued by saying that during the game he did not want to throw the ball Vontae's way. After a shaky rookie season in which he showed flashes, Davis is evolving into a true shutdown corner. He has turned in some amazing performances this year and will continue to get better. My personal favorite moment of Vontae this year (so far), was when he held Randy Moss without a catch on Monday Night Football. It is performances like those that turn you into a household name and help you become a star in this league (and help your team win games).

.

There is one player on the Dolphins roster that has experts in the football world talking, Cameron Wake. The Canadian Sensation, as I like to call him, is showing why he dominated the CFL and why he can do the same thing in the NFL. After two CFL Most Outstanding Player of the Year awards, Wake decided to take his talent far south of the boarder and signed with the Dolphins in '09. During his first year as a Dolphin, many questioned why Wake saw such little snaps when all he did was get to the QB, but when Jason Taylor & Joey Porter are ahead of you on the roster it is hard to get time on the field (especially when one of them ((porter)) won't come off the field even when told to do so). This offseason, Miami got rid of Porter and parted ways with Taylor, which put all the pressure on Cameron Wake. Wake took the torch and ran with it, outperforming both Jason Taylor and Joey Porter this season. Wake's best performance thus far came against the Packers last Sunday, when he had an amazing game with six hits on quarterback, Aaron Rodgers, three sacks, eight quarterback pressures, one forced holding penalty, and three tackles. Wake is having a pro bowl type year and may be the Dolphins biggest rising star.

.

Davone Bess, Vontae Davis and Cameron Wake are just three of the young players on this roster that have shown tons of promise, but there are others. Chad Henne, while the topic of a lot of scrutiny, is showing promise as a young QB in this league.  When comparing Henne with the other two quarterbacks drafted the same year, Henne's numbers are right there with Matt Ryan and he has better stats than Joe Flacco. Henne has three wins away from home and has had real solid showings. I personally believe Henne is going to be a franchise quarterback one day, but Dolfans must show patience. Another player that has become a young star for the Dolphins is Pro Bowl kicker Dan Carpenter. He had a career day in Green Bay kicking a 53 yard FG and made the winning kick of the game in OT. Also, who can forget about rookie linebacker Koa Misi who is having a very impressive rookie season with 12 tackles, 3 sacks and 1 touchdown. Misi is on pace to breaking the record of sacks by a rookie for the Dolphins.

.

I cannot predict how many games the Dolphins will win this year or if they will make it to post season play, but what I can do as a fan is rest assured that this team is filled with young rising stars that one day will be household names. For as much as we criticize the Trifecta, we have to praise them for putting together a roster with tons of potential and talent. The future looks bright in Miami and its roster is full of rising stars.
