HOLDING ON

Henne Nearly Perfect And Defense Stout In

14-10 Win Over Jackonville

     Ted Ginn

Last week the Dolphins fell behind 14-0 to the New England Patriots and rallied back to win the game. This week, the Dolphins busted out of the gates to a 14-0 lead but had to rally just to hang on. The Dolphins did just that as they defeated the Jacksonville Jaguars 14-10 in a game that helps shape the AFC Playoff picture.

The Dolphins looked like they would cruise to a potential blowout early in the game as they took a 14-0 lead after only having three possessions. Ricky Williams got the scoring going on a 1 yard touchdown run and Chad Henne added a 1 one yard touchdown run of his own on the next possession. It looked like Miami had control of the game until the Jaguars went on a 12 play, 68 yard drive that ended with a 1 yard touchdown run by the dynamic Maurice Jones-Drew that cut the lead to 14-7. With the momentum starting to swing to the Jaguars, the Dolphins began an impressive march down the field just before halftime. Starting from their own 18 yard line, they took the ball all the way down to the Jaguars 33 yard line before disaster struck. On an attempted reverse to Devone Bess, the ball was fumbled and recovered by the Jaguars killing a potentail score before halftime.

The problems and turnovers did not stop there for the Dolphins. In the second half, usually reliable Dan Carpenter missed a 38 yard field goal off the right upright, Ricky Williams fumbled and Chad Henne threw an interception. Even with all the miscues, the Dolphins defense stood strong and only allowed the Jaguars to put three points on the board.

For a Dolphins team that has blown many leads in the second half this season, things have changed in the past two weeks. After mounting a comeback win last week, the Dolphins held on to a win this week. Even with the one interception Henne threw in the 4th quarter, he was spot on and very impressive. At one point of the game he had completed 17 consecutive passes which tied the team record set by Chad Pennington in 2008. Henne finished the day 21 of 29 for 220 yards, no passing touchdowns and one interception. He did also rush for one yard and scored his first career rushing touchdown. Ricky Williams also had an impressive day as he rushed for 108 yards on 28 carries and one touchdown. Greg Camarillo had 7 receptions for 110 yards.

So, the Dolphins are now 7-6 and tied for the final wildcard spot. If the season ended today however, the Dolphins would find themselves on the outside looking in. The Dolphins still need help to get into the playoffs, but a win today against the Jaguars was a huge step forward. The Dolphins, winners of their past two games, have another critical matchup in Tennessee next week as they face the Titans.
