DOLPHINS TERMINATE JOEY PORTER (UPDATED)

 Joey Porter

Joey Porter made more headlines during the 2009 season with his mouth then he did with production on the field. After a January full of interviews complaining about his lack of playing time and desire to be cut, the Dolphins did just that today. The Dolphins terminated Porter's contract, which had two years remaining on it.

The release of Porter for the moment anyways, elevates Cameron Wake to a starting position for the 2010 season. However, with free agency and the draft still upon us, that could still change. After a Pro Bowl season in 2008 in which Porter notched 17.5 sacks, his production dropped significantly in 2009 with only 9 sacks.

UPDATE: The terminiation of Porter was deemed invalid by the league. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Dolphins are only $4.2 million under the 2009 season salary cap. By releasing Porter today, he would have been a $4.8 million cap hit. For the time being, Porter still remains on the Dolphins roster.
