Truth Should Clear Ireland PDF Print E-mail
Written by Josh Evans

TRUTH COMES OUT, IRELAND NOT IN WRONG

 Jeff Ireland

As many of you have obviously heard by now, there is a controversy that first came out earlier this week when Yahoo Sports columnist Mike Silver posted an article bashing Dolphins GM Jeff Ireland over an apparent question that was asked when wide receiver Dez Bryant made a pre-draft visit to Miami. The controversial question that was apparently asked by Ireland to Bryant was as folllows:

"Was your Mom a prostitute?"

The news that this was a question has caused public outcry over the past few days. Mike Silver called Ireland an "A-list A-hole". Former head Bears and Saints head coach Mike Ditka said "Somebody ought to whack him in the head" referring to Ireland. NFLPA executive DeMaurice Smith issued a statement bashing Ireland and calling the question unacceptable. The airways from ESPN to NFL Network to even the Howard Stern show have been piling on Ireland for his supposedly out of the blue interview question to Bryant.

After the initial story by Mike Silver of Yahoo Sports, Ireland issued an apology statement saying that he meant no disrespect to Bryant and that he was sorry that it offended him.

Fans accorss the NFL, including Dolphins fans have called for the Dolphins to fire Ireland over this incident. Even non football fans have heard this story and think Ireland should be fired over this incident. However, those calling for the firing and thinking Ireland is the reincarnation of Adolf Hitler should reconsider their stance after the news that came out today. The news today just happens to be the truth about what actually took place during that interview. As it turns out, the question that Ireland asked Bryant was a followup to an answer Bryant himself gave. CNNSI today released what actually took place in the interview. Below is the actual chain of events that led to the question that has people up in arms:

Ireland: "What did your dad do for a living"

Bryant: "My dad was a pimp"

Ireland: "What did your mom do for a living"

Bryant: "She worked for my dad"

Ireland: "Was your mom a prostitute?"

Bryant: "No, she wasn't a prostitute."

So as you can plainly see, Ireland did not ask point blank to Bryant whether or not his mom was a prostitute, it all originated from an answer Bryant gave to one of the questions. From the chain of events leading up to the question, it is the only real conclusion Ireland could make and the question was not uncalled for. This was not a case of Ireland first asking what his favor color was, then whether his mom was a prostitute then followed by what his favorite food was. The events above, the true events, should clear Ireland's good name.

Of course today Bryant is calling the CNNSI report "A lie", but what else is he going to say? By going to the media in the first place and trying to make the Dolphins look bad, he must not have realized that the story would take off. Once a story takes off, it is only a matter of time until the truth will be released and today that truth is out. Bryant is now panicking and trying to save any credibility he has left. Afterall, this all comes from a player that was suspended just last season from college football for lying to NCAA investigators. Hard to believe a proven liar like Bryant over Ireland who up until this incident was considered one of the most classy front office employees in the entire league.

While this story is not likely to go away any time soon, it is hopeful that the true events get passed around the media as much as the half truth version got passed around the past few days. In the end, fans who criticized Ireland, the media who piled on and even Dez Bryant himself owes Jeff Ireland an apology for trying to ruin his good image.
